The project explores roles and expectations of motherhood as well as examining definitions of family.  It details the dilemmas for a mother who tries to parent when not physically present in her household; the dilemmas that she faces in confronting attitudes of judgment and prejudice; the dilemmas presented by feelings of guilt, rejection, and abandonment. Secular research has been skeptical of relationships between religion and personal and family life.  The doctrine of the Trinity provides a theological basis for this study. Assessment instruments (SFI and SWBS) indicate that a population of healthy to midrange families with preference for a centripetal style of functioning report high levels of spiritual, religious, and existential well-being. Significant, positive correlations exist between perceptions of family system and perceptions of spiritual well-being. The project began with the premise that the Bible, and the stories of the lives of the people in it, has often been viewed as an authoritative document within the African-American community.  The project lifted up through preaching various biblical family behavior imperfections and showed the 'presence of God,' as an incentive to move listeners beyond their shame and pain toward wholeness, growth and productivity.  The preaching of family sermons, resulted in a desire for more sermons on biblical families. Two groups of individuals between the ages of thirty and forty-five, raised in Christian and non-Christian homes, completed the SWBS and FSI.  The thesis that a child raised in a healthy Christian home would generate high scores on the SWBS were proved to be true. In this project/dissertation the writer has constructed a research of the married life of participants and administered an experiment for nine weeks. The methodology in this project to measure the improvement of the marriage enrichment was for the experimental and control groups to take two tests: a pre-test before the program, and a post-test three months after the end of the program.
