Biblical and practical marital instruction can help strengthen the marriages of the students at Southeastern College who are facing pressures which are threatening their marriages.  Pressures needing attention include communication, role expectations and time management.  Student couples worked to develop biblical and practical material to strengthen their marriages.  The couples' marriages were strengthened but will require more work. The research involved measuring three goals within families: time spent, frequency of faith activity, and attitudes regarding the spiritual condition of the home.  Following a six-week focus of preaching and teaching concerning domestic faith ritual usage, the ministry resulted in a positive increase in all goal areas.  Each of seven participating families demonstrated positive improvement in at least one of the three goals. The author preached five sermons on the family and held ten small-group sessions with the purpose of education and training the church and the small group.  The group members were required to hold family devotional times for six weeks. Techniques used were the pastor's home visits and family dialogue which invited family members to write and share notes on topics they agreed to discuss.  The pastor made one home visit before the ceremony of confirmation and the second visit afterwards.  The information gleaned from these conversations shed light on the inner life of the families, their systems, traditions, hurts and hopes. A worship committee was organized and instructed in the Presbyterian Directory of Worship.  Surveys were distributed to families and small groups before and after two special worship series, to evaluate the congregation's worship life.  Each series responded to needs expressed in the initial survey. The project accomplished this by developing and conducting a fourth-grade level literacy training course on family values and beliefs.  Following an introductory chapter, Chapter 2 presents a biblical mandate, an historical precedent and a theological rationale for the project.  Chapter 3 discusses family life in eastern Kentucky over the past 250 years.  Chapter 4 discusses the project's literacy training program. An eight-week training seminar, which focused on the development of certain healthy family traits, assisted the families in accomplishing this task.  These training sessions offered times for mutual support and dialogue among the families. The results of the project revealed that only slight growth was realized. Separation of husband from family to work in distant places for economic survival is a most serious situation impacting families in Kenya.  The church has an important role on educating families to survive and reshape society. Learning methods employed included a seven week sermon series, thirteen training sessions that dealt specifically with husband-wife and parent-child relationships, and a marriage enrichment retreat.  Evaluation of the control and experimental groups was based on a pre and posttest instrument, an instrument measuring relationship change, outside observation, subjective analysis, and personal reflections.
