Therefore, the first two chapters of this project demonstrate a complete frame of reference for conducting marriage and family counseling including explication of a fully integrated biblical/theological rationale for such counseling interventions. The special third chapter on premarital counseling is included to emphasize the importance of this often over-looked resource in marriage and family counseling. The theoretical framework for marriage and family counseling ministry presented in this project is cogently informed by the literature review in the second chapter leading to a clear definition of stylistic differentials. An example of one preferred and experientially typical style of intervention is demonstrated in the fourth chapter through a comprehensive family case study. The case study includes essential components of evaluative and interventive planning, such as diagnostic tools and apparatus, description and assessment of individual and family system dynamics, conceptualization process and development of a cohesive treatment plan using cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems therapy, and resources for spiritual formation, growth, and discipleship. The comprehensive treatment plan is followed in the fifth chapter by a critical evaluation and analysis of how the case has actually progressed to date. The family in question has many issues, including multiple prior marriages, depression, dysfunction in communication, and a current crisis: one of the children is caught with drugs and is expelled from school. Data revealed realistic actions that can be taken to improve pastoral counseling and provide for healing among family members. 'Being there' emerges as a phrase used by men, women, and children to describe the task of fathering, in contrast to the parental 'otherness' that characterizes unhealthy fathering practices. Four general landscapes--cognition, affect, communication, and action--present roadblocks to intimacy and opportunities for 'being there' for a father with his children. Based on interviews and questionnaires distributed among bereaved families, the project constructs a model that establishes networks among families, funeral directors, support groups, and social service agencies; empowers families and support ministries to meet needs of those who experience grief; and promotes healthy pastor/parish relationships as pastors lead bereaved families and communities through stages of grief.
