The church often lacks ministries that channel the warrior spirits in boys in healthy directions.  The author explored the father-son metaphors in the Scripture and various warrior traditions and identified valuable ethical elements for a ministry focused on initiation. The project director began by researching the fields of Christian manhood and mentoring. The director developed and implemented a six-session course to equip the participants to mentor their sons in the areas of faith, family, finances, fights, friends, and future. The director wrote daily devotions for the participants and paired them in strength teams to offer encouragement. The course ended with an overnight retreat. The thesis is that contemporary fathers will exhibit behavioral, cognitive and affective change with proper equipping that is lacking in contemporary families and churches. Fathers were given a series of stories written from the author's experience as a pilot. These stories are a prelude to biblical stories to be used with dialogue eliciting questions that invite vulnerability from father and son. The research assumed that many fathers lack capabilities of nurturing adolescent sons.  The research procedure used the observational/ethnomethodical method to determine the findings.  The process provided a personal fathering profile to reveal nurturing strengths/weaknesses, a workshop to address issues systemic to nurturing, and a father/son wilderness trip to practice nurturing skills. The study focuses on four cases where men were in therapy with the author and reports the progress of these men by their own report. A theoretical structure is described, identifying this grief as a response to men's early developmental experience of lack of a father figure with whom to identify.  The author proposes that through a conscious grieving of the loss inherent in this early experience, men may have greater capacity to engage in relationship.  The argument is developed through literature review, self-in-relation theory and attachment theory. Excerpts from interviews illustrate the author's thesis and a theological grounding is developed for the analysis and healing. The hypotheses: 1) adolescent boys have a vague understanding of what they are to accomplish in adolescence; 2) father/father figure interaction with an adolescent boy will enhance a boy's male sex-role identity; 3) teaching the developmental tasks will clarify the boy's understanding of what they are to accomplish; 4) public recognition as 'young men' will solidify their purpose in life. Small group teaching and interaction were combined with father-to-son teaching.  The project was evaluated descriptively, theologically, and by objective tests.  A Christian rite of passage was administered.  Hypothesis one was not validated, two was inconclusive, three and four were validated.
