(Robert James), 1904-1973"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project is designed to analyze the preaching of the five Senior Ministers of The Riverside Church in the City of New York, Harry Emerson Fosdick, Robert J. McCracken, Ernest T. Campbell, William Sloan Coffin, Jr., and James A. Forbes, Jr. and determine if principles of biblical preaching can be extrapolated from their preaching ministries.  By examining the biographies, times, congregations, literature, message and sermon methods of these five preachers whose ministries span a 70-year period, we may be able to extract techniques that can be useful for contemporary preachers to be more relevant communicators of the Word of God.  The project begins with biblical foundations for preaching and moves to the specific times in which these five preachers spoke to their congregations, communities and society. A life situational approach to preaching and teaching was developed for naval deployment, in light of the twentieth century American life situational preaching of Harry Emerson Fosdick and Edgar N Jackson, and Lewis Sherrill's theology and practice of Christian education.  A religious program resource (the study guide) was developed and was used successfully by naval shipboard chaplains. One method rarely used by Protestants is the study of biographies of spiritual masters with the express purpose of teaching the lessons of spiritual development. Six spiritual masters, Augustine, Teresa of Avila, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, Harry Emerson Fosdick, and Georgia Harkness, were presented to a study group at the United States Naval Academy.  Pre- and post-testing with a professionally developed instrument to ascertain if measurable change occurred as a consequence of exposure to these spiritual masters was done.
