To test the thesis, a standardized questionnaire was given to patients of the Presbyterian Hospital chemical dependency unit in Oklahoma City; the questionnaires were  given as the patients arrived and also to 100 former patients who had maintained at least one year of sobriety.  Of the eleven pre-treatment respondents, nine were stage 2 and two were stage 3.  Of the 60 with at least one year sobriety who responded, twenty-eight were at stage 3, fifteen were at stage 4, and fourteen were at stage 5. The project was designed to teach parents some basic principles of Christian nurture, from a Wesleyan, theological perspective, informed by developmental theory. The child-rearing motifs of John Wesley were taught within the structural-developmental framework of James W Fowler's faith development theory, to inform parents of some of the theological and psychological factors necessary for a more informed nurture of Christian faith in their children. The project was carried out through a series of seminars conducted at the First Church of the Nazarene in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The interview technique was adapted from a study done by William Perry and based on the faith development models of John Westerhoff and James Fowler. Those who were active in the church's youth program displayed a number of characteristics including: supportive parents, some type of emotional 'faith experience,' and a significant relationship with another adult for whom faith was important and meaningful.  Those interactions are more significant in some ways than the curriculum or program used. Participants expressed six types of expectations which motivated their learnings, and their growth is correlated to Fowler's faith development theory. Such worship should take account of the way people develop morally and spiritually.  The models of Lawrence Kohlberg in moral development and of James Fowler in faith development are examined and related to current concepts in Christian worship and social ethics.  Five worship services and sermons were used to test developmental strategies on social-ethical themes. Three members of the Rochester Friends Meeting were interviewed twice: once in 1979 and again in 1981. The open-ended interviews were designed to provide sufficient information to locate the individuals in their respective faith stages.  In addition, the history of New York Yearly Meeting was examined in the context of Fowler's stages to establish the modal context of the Society.  The modal context of the Yearly  Meeting was seen as Stage 4, with individuals interviewed spread in  Stages 3, 4, and 5. The individual in  Stage 3 was the birthright member of the Society, while the other two joined as adults. Although conclusions cannot be drawn on such a small study, it is speculated that the structures of the Society do not impel a person's development beyond Stage 3. Apparently, other life events must provide the stimulus for development. The practicum was designed with six members of the congregation participating in the exposure to James Fowler's theory of faith development. As their ideas of 'faith' were enlarged, the group, in conjunction with the Christian education committee, designed curriculum and courses whereby the educational needs of thecongregation were addressed.  The assumption has proven correct for the six persons that were involved in the practicum.
