Grieving friends and clients living in the rural tri-county area of southeast Virginia were at a loss when it came to finding local grief support group or classes. Connecticut Conference","Christianity","Funeral rites and ceremonies","United Church of Christ--Worship"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation examines the rites that members and churches of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ perform when a member of the community dies. A distinction between a 'funeral' and 'memorial service' is established, with a funeral defined as a rite provided by the Church at the death of a Christian that is both a rite of passage for the dead and a service of the worship of God for the living, and a memorial service identified as a communal gathering that focuses more on eulogizing and remembering the deceased and less on the overt worship of God. By examining the difference between the two, and by looking at historic liturgical sources, it is clear that in the Connecticut Conference at this time, most rites are memorial services rather than funerals. Assessment was made by means of a qualitative analysis of worship bulletins for rites at the time of death that were submitted by seventy-two of the Connecticut Conference churches, in which worship patterns, hymns and scriptures were identified in order to construct a 'moment-in-time' snapshot of commonalities among churches in a tradition that cherishes individual expression and resists standard liturgies imposed from the denomination. It also provided an avenue for people to discuss their own death and to begin the process of pre-planning their funerals as a way to celebrate their life story and take some of the burden off their family. Using traditional research methods and observations made from his ministry experience, the author created a workshop for members of his congregation. A method for quickly and discreetly evaluating the theological world of family members is developed, worship elements corresponding to preferred theological world are defined, and guidelines for evaluation of the effectiveness of the resulting service are established. This approach was utilized by the author with 15 families having no formal church affiliation. The author researched the needs through training sessions, surveys, focus groups, and interviews with four experts. The result is the Ministry of Hope and Consolation Funeral Vigil Formation Program that includes a presenter guide, a participant booklet, discernment surveys, and a six-session video-assisted resource. The context for this project is a small town in Ohio that has been struggling with its identity and solidarity. The hypothesis was tested using a workshop, sermons, personal testimonials, and questionnaires.
