Twenty-three alcoholics and non-alcoholics were interviewed and the content of their responses was analyzed. Alcoholics had a higher number of alcohol-related losses and exhibited chronic and delayed grief reactions.  Alcohol suspended the grieving process.  Sobriety allowed the grief process to be completed. Using attachment theory, grief studies, and family theory, the project views divorce, single parenthood, and remarriage as a process of mourning and recovery.  Divorce both necessitates and interferes with the usual mourning process.  Unfinished mourning alters expectations about remarriage and potentially hinders the formation of stepfamilies.  Interviews with remarried couples and case material from the author's counseling experience illustrate the theory. The rationale given from Scripture is that believers who receive comfort from God should pass that comfort on to others. Library research, personal interviews and life experiences give practical ways in which, by counseling and careful follow-up, comfort may be brought to the dying and to those in mourning.  Research revealed that funeral plans are best made in advance, eliminating unnecessary, hidden expenses and avoidance of emotional trauma. Exilic prophets spoke to the grief of the Exile and speak to today's rural churches in exile.  Rural churches can find new identity through grief counseling techniques.  The project applied grief counseling methods to eight declining rural churches.  The project demonstrates that grief is part of rural churches and grief counseling leads to new identity and renewed vitality. It also moves immediately to settle down with the griever in an extended period of grief sharing and healing. It shows ways to identify that grief, and pictures the dynamics of three congregations in grief.
