Chapter 3 analyzed the actual implementation of the project.  The fourth chapter served as an evaluation of the entire project. Training is most helpful when the caregiver is able to talk about personal feelings, beliefs and experiences; learn about phases of bereavement and grief responses; and apply these insights in typical caregiving situations. A specific focus is put upon grief as expressed individually and corporately.  Research was done with individuals and the congregation as a whole.  A qualitative approach was used, blending the themes of grounded theory and participant observation.  Specific methods included a journal, conversational interviews, and liturgical services.  Positive results were gained from having individuals and the congregation deal purposefully with their grief rather than denying its reality. Vulnerability, loss, and grief are universal phenomena providing a key to analysis of the issue.  Correlation is done between the individual experience of grief with collective data regarding the Old Testament experience, the Black American experience, and research into episodes of mass trauma.  Insights from these studies are applied in an analysis of a particular ministry to the homeless. It used a case study method that observed ten spouses of deceased cancer patients.  The author planned and implemented the pilot project to meet the needs of the spouses.  He conducted five training sessions with three spouses and took each spouse to visit two other bereaved spouses.  The project included the trainees' views about the development of a lay grief counselor network.
