This project involves working with the corporate and personal grief of a particular congregation in its attempts to deal with a series of losses within the church. This project proposes that correlations between personal and corporate grief allow techniques used in facilitating the grief process in one to aid in the grief process of the other.  Deliberate use of pastoral work aided the congregation in its grief journey. Correlations were found between personal and corporate grief. Using the story of Jacob wrestling with God in Genesis 32:22-31 as a backdrop against which we might view suicide in more compassionate ways, the author brings our attention to the graciousness of the Divine in matters of complexity, where there is grayness and a shadow side.  This is a phenomenological study that explores the concepts of 'blessing' and 'wound' - what it is like to live with 'both/and,' rather than overcoming, as Jacob needed to learn to live with both a blessing and a wound. First, the director sought to inform the church concerning its biblical responsibility to the bereaved.  Second, to motivate church members to commit to become involved in hands-on ministry to the bereaved after the funeral.  Third, the director developed sermons that helped grieving people to be comforted and facilitated them in their healing process.  This facilitation was accomplished by better understanding of the hope and comfort given in the Scriptures. By pre and post testing the author measures a baseline of both help received and the knowledge gained about the healthy Christian grief process. This was achieved through a two weekend grief retreat and sixteen sessions of spiritual direction. Nineteen of the participants completed pre-test and post-test questionnaires to assess the impact of the formative event. The greatest benefit was in terms of increasing emotional and spiritual healing, promoting a greater experience of God, and learning how to express grief more constructively. Rather than helping pastors to find the right answers, attention is given to helping pastors ask the right questions in cross-cultural grief care. Laity must be engaged in a five-step process: grieving people receive comfort from scripture and one another; they personally encounter a living faith in Jesus Christ; they obtain guidance in the grieving process through a workbook; they experience emotional healing; and they become involved in helping others to deal with their grief. Palliative care was given to grieving children by an interdisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, teachers, and chaplain. Adults and children shared their work of play, while naming fears. HospiceKidsCare became a procedural study to assess children's grief. The study incorporates adult processes of assessment, treatment, and evaluation in parallel to child processes of naming, playing, and healing during a death experience. The goals of this project were:  (1) to lead a selected group to understand the grief process; (2) to assist the selected group to enhance their counseling skills in the grief process; and (3) to enable the selected group to develop a one-year plan to counsel persons in grief.  The project methodology included lectures, videotapes and audiotapes, case studies with role-plays, varied visual learning experiences, and cognitive knowledge tested by group game competition.  All of the preceding procedures and techniques occurred during the eight training sessions.
