Theological, biblical and psychological foundations relating to grief are explored.  A history and description of establishing and conducting such a group at Carle Foundation Hospital for one year is given.  There are many common feelings, ideas, sensations, and behaviors among the bereaved, but they will be uniquely individual in their expression. The training program consisted of six sessions which made the counselors aware of the feelings of grief, and how they might effectively relate to persons in grief.  After training, seven of the ten persons trained were willing to be assigned to bereaved persons whom they contacted on a regular basis.  These contacts proved to be helpful to the bereaved persons over the six months to a year that they related to them. Caplan and other researchers emphasize that a crisis is characteristically self-limiting and lasts from four to six weeks.  The paper illustrates that a goal-oriented sense of commitment develops in sharp contrast to normal modes of treatment.  Crisis management/intervention is not counseling; its goal is the resolution of the crisis and a return to normalcy. The paper deals with the nature of crisis, the dynamics of grief, and death as a grief crisis.  The appendices are: 1) two verbatims dealing with a dying patient and a grief sufferer; 2) four surveys; 3) a detailed instruction format for persons who are called upon to manage/intervene in crisis situations; 4) practical aspects of crisis intervention/management; and 5) general considerations on death and dying. The tapes focus on critical areas of pastoral care within the hospital: The Initial Call, The Presurgical Call, The Spiritual Needs of Patients, Family Members and Imminent Crises.  The tapes will be used for the orientation of pastors who volunteer to serve as night chaplains.  The pastors who volunteer are ordained by their respective denominations, but few of them have been clinically trained as chaplains.  The video tapes have been produced to help introduce the volunteer chaplains to the environment of the hospital in which they will be doing pastoral care.  The tapes endeavor to provide some of the pastoral skills which pastors may be lacking. The tapes teach sound pastoral theology and provide models of pastoral care which the volunteer pastors can discuss and evaluate.  The didactic material raises the issues faced by the patient.  It then seeks to address these issues through actual models of pastoral care. The hermeneutic was pastoral and involved two foci: the theological-theoretical and the experiential-phenomenological. The former dealt with paul tillich's being and nonbeing as it relates to anxiety. This particular method of study focused on the nature of pastoral ministry via living human documents (persons).  It is akin to what is called a phenomenological hermeneutic. The data partially fulfilled the expectations of the hypothesis. Although each church is unique in size and composition, as well as in the circumstances surrounding the pastor's departure, the common element of grief is present.  Personal interviews with church leaders elicited various expressions of sadness in the loss of their pastor.  With learnings related to grief resulting from death and separation, application is then made to the loss of a significant other, a pastor. Biblical and theological references are included.
