Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved.  In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately.  This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. During a six-week workshop, the instructor introduced a proactive grief management tool he calls Flash Grief. The conclusion reached is that an imaginative use of the Order of Christian Funerals does indeed offer scope for remembering. For six consecutive weeks they met, and processed their grief pains and acquired insights on being caregivers to other grievers. Each exercise was based on one of the tasks of mourning that Wm Worden discussed in his book, Grief Counseling and Grief Therapy. These exercises were used in a group setting consisting of six single adult women. Two were widows, three were divorced and one had lost a brother to AIDS. This dissertation examines the psycho-social aspects of grief and healing, the value of telling one's story in that process, and a study of Job and Psalms 112, 88, and 30 as theological commentary to the journey of grief and healing. The result is a grief workshop design, with comments by three evaluators.
