Further, this thesis posits that spiritual care professionals (e.g. chaplains) need to move from strictly ancillary support toward the practice of integrative medicine.  The thesis begins with an historical perspective which outlines the gradual bifurcation between spirituality and healthcare in the Western world.  This split was occasioned principally by the European Church's growing emphasis on the salvation of souls, and by science's growing dominion over the physical and natural worlds. This section ends with evidence of an emerging reintegration of spirituality and healthcare. With the understanding that such a reintegration requires an inclusive definition of spirituality, the thesis posits a definition of spirituality unrelated directly to religion and religious practices. A discussion follows utilizing the development of Old Testament spirituality to understand the relationship between medical crisis and spiritual crisis.  This is followed by an extensive presentation of the efforts of scientific researchers to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality/religiosity and physical health.  The last substantive chapter of this thesis is devoted to the writer's efforts as a professional healthcare chaplain to help make spiritual care an integral part of healthcare. The effect of positive faith on physical, mental, and spiritual wellness was tested.  Verbal and written responses of a group of twenty volunteers from the First United Methodist Church of Monahans, Texas to a series of sermons and positive coaching was the basis of this study.  The participants ranged in age from seventeen to seventy five. A worship-centered, sickle cell pain intervention support group was developed, implemented and evaluated for six weeks.  Subjects were their won control group.  Using a 0-10 Numeric Pain Inventory Scale (NPIS) subjects measured personal pre- and post-intervention pain levels.  Analysis of NPIS data on both first and last visits showed subjects' pain levels significantly reduced following interventions.  Summary and analysis of patients' comments corroborated and strengthened the analytical results. Specifically, the dissertation pursues the question: what benefits, possibilities, barriers, and limitations need to be considered for interdisciplinary ministry collaboration to be fostered between faith community (parish) nurses and faith group leaders in promoting a renewal of both faith and health in times of transition?  Data was gathered over five years. Patients from Florida Hospital Family Health Center completed the Religiosity Coping Index. The thesis is that there is a need for greater cooperation between the medical community and the church.  Screening and education performed in church stetting would be a help to both parishioners and doctors.  Questionnaires used revealed interest among clients and volunteers.  On that basis, a clinic was begun and observed for a period of two months.  The project demonstrated that health-related screening and education was of benefit to both medical and church communities.
