Preaching hope to a congregation which is experiencing a decline in its economy, population, and the health of its individual members is necessary. I used the preaching techniques of lived experience and narrative preaching, based on the theology of the cross. Within a funeral setting mourners are pondering not only the death of the deceased but also their own destiny. Based on a review of current resources--especially feminist and womanist theological literature--the project develops a feminist theology of anger, an analytic survey instrument, and a 10-session curriculum, and tries these materials with a group of disadvantaged youth and a comparison group. Disadvantaged youth indicate more anger in hypothetical situations, particularly those involving disrespect. The project applied hermeneutical phenomenology strategy to data gathered from interviews with participants, identifying six hope themes: absolute, promise, inner-voice, well-spring, diminished-future, new-us. The author develops a theology of hopeful worship, based on the understanding that in worship we participate in a Messianic banquet already begun in the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Beginning with a review of current literature about eschatological dimensions of worship, the author describes major authors in the field, their issues, and their insights. The project constructs a theology of hopeful worship based on eschatological dimensions of regular weekly worship services, sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist, and a liturgical calendar. The author concludes that concentration on eschatological dimensions of worship makes those who worship aware not only of the 'end times' but also of the nearness of Christ. If such is the case, then our funeral rituals must provide environments of care in which remembering within the context of the Christian story might take place. The conclusion reached is that an imaginative use of the Order of Christian Funerals does indeed offer scope for remembering. It was grounded in the Genesis pericope in which Jacob wrestled with the ish at the Jabbok, which set cardiac crisis in the context of a life-and-death confrontation. Evaluation utilized a 'purpose in life' test given to a treatment group after participating in rehabilitation using pastoral intervention, and to a control group who had not experienced cardiac crisis.
