During an eight month period (September 2013 - April 2014) I led my congregation in intentional outreach to two specific under-represented populations that we wished to reach - men and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The goal of the project was to reach out to these groups to express our welcome and discover ways to involve them in the life of our congregation. The intent was to live out our belief in welcome and hospitality which Jesus demonstrated through his life and ministry.  A men's fellowship was formed for the duration of the project. They chose to meet monthly for breakfast and conversation as a way to strengthen their bonds and create an opportunity to meet new people. A new church committee, the Open and Affirming (ONA) Action committee, was formed to intentionally reach out to the LGBT population. They created visual displays within the church building, hosted an outreach luncheon, and participated in a regional conference for LGBT youth. As its pastor, the author taught the congregation the best practice of radical hospitality, and instituted generational transition for 2014 church leadership. The hospitality ministries team was created. In eighteen months' practice and teaching of radical hospitality, most key leaders are now younger, relatively new, or more engaging.  The hospitality and shepherding ministry team actively practices radical hospitality for the congregation. The congregation has been appreciative of the new culture of hospitality. The American population in 2013 is 317 million people; 22 million are surviving veterans, plus an estimated 13 million family members. The purpose of this project was to discover the importance of space in a church's ministry of hospitality. Twenty-four persons from the congregation attended a six-week course during which they completed four assessments that were designed to measure their knowledge and skills in offering hospitality and evaluating the quality of the church's place for extending hospitality. The value of denominationalism itself is in question. An answer to the decline of the mainline Christian church lies in a reimplementation of the principles of 'incarnational hospitality.' Incarnational hospitality involves the church interacting with its world ad Jesus did: incarnationally, conveying the living God into the world of people. This is done through the practice of the three principles of biblical hospitality: protection, provision, and renewal.
