The author researched opinions of biblical scholars and Christian theologians, interviewed gay and lesbian Christians, and studied three congregations in order to develop models of hospitality that welcome gay and lesbian people into the fellowship of United Methodist congregations. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. That focus of inclusion offers a foundation for biblical and theological rationales for alternative understandings of hospitality and concrete expressions of welcome offered by actual congregations. The resultant model offers a prophetic way for any church to welcome the strangers in its midst."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128801210531840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:05:35.090Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:14:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:03:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"494a3595-57b4-4162-b978-b0c3c8859b43","accessControl_ssim":["01331c8e-eaf7-4eb4-956a-65629ad0116b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Cham sae church members: a case study in the church's ministry of hospitality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:14:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:16:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["caad33af-b925-4945-b4a0-ec4655a20fe7"],"hasLease_ssim":["b9641901-6a59-43fe-bff9-b04ddf512dc8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The church is called to communicate God's love and acceptance through ministries of hospitality and welcoming, providing a church-home environment, information-sharing processes, and interpersonal relationship opportunities that will be perceived by strangers as inclusive, inviting, and sincere. Size is not the issue in this mission, although many congregations use size as an excuse. God's love is inclusive and unconditional; all Christians receive it and are called to offer it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133966701428736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:41.286Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:26:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ffa409e3-697a-453d-b574-05dcaf48f57a","accessControl_ssim":["1bad59aa-ee93-4f5d-8476-4b164e2b1f3e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching in the company of strangers: in search of an evangelical voice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:26:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bd460b28-e3c9-45ac-b75f-644bb0209c62"],"hasLease_ssim":["7e3c5582-5f44-49d5-bd90-0b5a6cd5e5e6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Lindberg"],"year_tesim":["1994"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Keith E Wiens"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Hospitality--Religious aspects--Christianity","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper identifies the spirit of hospitality as the key to preaching in an evangelical voice among strangers.
