During their eight weeks of training, eighty recruits were exposed to four sessions with the chaplain in which a modified approach to Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of cognitive moral education was used as the educational structure and method. The recruits were pre-tested and post-tested with the Defining Issues Test developed by James R. Rest.  Stage levels of moral development were determined in the pre-test and used by the chaplain in lesson preparation.  The stage levels were compared with the post-test in an attempt to determine moral development during recruit training.
