Each lesson includes as historical description of slavery and an explanation of a spiritual. The curriculum focuses on the public and coded, secret meanings in spirituals. Bible references as source inspiration are provided with each spiritual. A professional panel of twenty-one educators evaluated the curriculum. They found it was an objective presentation of the history of slavery and the spirituals.
