The diversity that appears to be threatening unity and advancement of the postdenominational church is in fact a gift of God.  This diversity, under guidance of the Holy Spirit and (in part) through the ministry of preaching, can be harnessed for great good in carrying out local church mission.  The project directed a process that drafted a statement of congregational identity for approval by the congregation. This project examines the nature of the church through selected biblical, theological, literary, and sociological studies dealing with identity marking characteristics.  Congregational identity is an evolving, elusive concept.  Dominant themes can help to discern some of its basic qualities. Many churches appear to be unable to help Japanese Americans.  Understanding the origins of Christian faith is an approach that helps Japanese Americans interpret their history in the United States. This project proposes to establish implications for mission and evangelism for small churches in multicultural contexts through identification of the mission orientation, cultural mores, and welcoming practices that give them their own congregational identities.  In so doing congregations will come to recognize the distinguishing features and qualities that make them what they are.
