Much damage is done to the cause of Christ by internal conflict over authority and submission issues, especially in the North American Protestant sending faith mission boards. This thesis seeks to lay out a beginning working biblical theology of followership. Its conclusion is that Christian believers are called more to followership than leadership and a proper understanding of submission and obedience can aid greatly in the worldwide spread of the gospel. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of a biblical theology of submission and obedience will result in healthier, more sustaining, and effective missionaries and ministries. To illustrate such a statement, it will look at the early Society of Jesus under St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut under Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Each will be explored as to their history, missionary movement and effectiveness, early documents, and spiritual practices. This retreat manual was designed to lead people into a deeper spirituality.  The group that tested this out was comprised of volunteers from the church I pastor, the Fulton Alliance Church.  The expectation of the retreat manual was to allow the retreatants to grow in the Lord as well as to serve him in the context of the local church.  The retreat manual was divided into three sections: salvation, sanctification, and vocation.  Section one was designed to give clarity to salvation.  Section two was designed to lead to further present sanctification.  Section three was designed to assist the retreatants in identifying and applying their unique vocation. More and more individuals are giving importance to their personal spiritual experience.  Simultaneously, such people are recognizing the value of usable patterns of spiritual formation from the history of Christian spirituality.  These time-tested models are providing help in discovering the divine presence and identifying the quiet whispers of God in one's personal life as well as within the communities to which one belongs. Accepting a renewed quest of spirituality as part of our contemporary American society, this dissertation/project attempted to assist six men, from three distinct generations, in their everyday awareness of God. The pattern from the history of Christian spiritual formation under scrutiny was the 'Spiritual Exercises' written in the 16th century by Ignatius Loyola. From for 12 weeks, September 1 through November 30, six Presbyterian men from the same parish entered into the Exercises.  The primary resource was 'Choosing Christ in the World:  Directing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola According to Annotation Eighteen and Nineteen'  by Joseph Tetlow, S.J. During the 90 days each participant followed a daily sequence of prayer and reflection adapted from the Spiritual Exercises.  Individually, the retreatants met twice a month with the retreat director/dissertation author and once a month gathered together as a group. Written journal entries composed during the experience, one-on-one meetings with the retreat director/author and self-evaluations completed by the participants at the beginning and conclusion of the project provide the basis to identify affect (emotions) and effect (behaviors) influenced by the experience with the Exercises. However, people within Western and Eastern traditions are unaware of or do not understand each other's ways of obtaining inner peace.  Two rich forms of prayer are largely unknown apart from their respective traditions are Ignatian prayer practices and Taoist prayer practices.  This project builds a bridge that connects these two streams so that Eastern and Western people can come to know and love one another more for the holistic well-being of humanity.  This project discusses Taoist and Ignatian spirituality and integrates them at the level of both theory and practice.  The study demonstrates how, while neither tradition is deficient in its own right, each can complement the other and enlarge the whole spiritual experience for Christians--to be whole, and to be complete in body, mind and spirit. A model for this integration of Ignatian prayer practices and Taoist meditation practices is 'Awareness of God in all things.'
