The thesis of this paper is that this dormant potential may be fanned to life through contextualized missionary mediation, implementing a carefully conceited Experiential Missions Training (EMT) process, designed to integrate cross-cultural missions projects and inter-congregational teams with the benefits of Experiential Learning Theory (ELT). The author draws out the principles of Experiential Missions Training through a case study of his own documented experiences of training teams of French believers from local churches in Lyon, France on missions ventures to the Kursk State University in western Russia. His conclusion is that these experiences provide enough missiological data, experience, and positive outcomes to justify the implementation of a full-orbed EMT pilot project among evangelical city churches in France, embodied in an indigenous missions sodality created for this purpose."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133051531558912,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:08.511Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:25:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"17e8042f-7839-4eb8-b361-6b3fe3486980","accessControl_ssim":["2102e5bf-b772-4360-824c-8289bc58af3a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Christian and Missionary Alliance marriage encounter ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:54:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4ea14be9-88d6-4b4d-8d18-8711488d3a51"],"hasLease_ssim":["46f8d833-aaa6-485f-a51b-0fd6184fa1ab"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William F Murray"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Reatha H Searing"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with families","Christian and Missionary Alliance","Intercultural communication","Evangelistic work","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The research question explores whether the Alliance Marriage Encounter (ALMA) is an effective strategy for cross-cultural witness which has verifiable, quantitative results in stimulating evangelism and church growth in a missions context. The project also proposes some missional attitudes that the Presbyterian Church (USA) should adopt to welcome the brothers and sisters from other ethnicities."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129899666243584,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:02.659Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:13:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:19:24Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6e6689a-3fba-4d3d-83fb-180597cdc9e0","accessControl_ssim":["96318c8e-6c0d-4297-8007-f1c745208e03"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The challenges to the church's identity: a cross-cultural perspective from Matthew's gospel"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:13:02Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:44:11Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6b5c92c3-38e2-4c22-b1ab-3e472143c7f0"],"hasLease_ssim":["964d1cff-46cb-4eb4-80d1-08f9c6ccd455"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Carlos F Cardoza-Orlandi"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Valdir Xavier França"],"keyword_tesim":["Presbytery of Tampa Bay (Fla)","Development","Committee on Evangelism and Church"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Emigration and immigration","Intercultural communication","Bosch, David J., 1929-1992","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Bible. The importance for mainline traditions in the U.S. to develop an inter-cultural theoretical and theological framework in the establishment of an inclusive church, is crucial, and the intercultural perspective of the church found in Matthew's Gospel can shed some light into this discussion."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129674265395200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:19:27.700Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:04:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:45:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"82d7a1f1-facb-4d5f-bbbd-a448f5005258","accessControl_ssim":["033414f8-7507-4150-bcf0-ba796ab5328a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Maximizing informal learning in an intentional missionary training community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:04:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:59:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["470aea26-162f-4186-81c4-264df5db0dd9"],"hasLease_ssim":["844605cd-2773-40df-bd0b-8bb35310e41b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David Seiver"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert Walter Brynjolfson"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Intercultural communication","Education--Experimental methods","Missionaries--Training of","Moral education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The methodological and contextual limitations of academic communities impede the development of needed character traits and attitudes deemed important for effective cross-cultural ministry. Dedicated missionary training communities utilize informal education to achieve these desired outcomes. This project identified the predominant character qualities and attitudes found in various bodies of literature on missionary competency profiling. Further, it demonstrates that informal and nonformal education are the most suitable methods for effective character and attitude formation in pre-field missionaries. A correlation was presented based on the New Testament writings, demonstrating that Jesus Christ targeted character qualities and attitudes, and addressed these by using informal educational methods, and established an intentional community as the basis of addressing these training needs. This project also provided an instructional program designed for missionary training communities to increase awareness, model and practice seven desired character traits and attitudes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719124039892992,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:45:05.342Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:03:27Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:17:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b03eda81-3a82-4937-aab7-2a08d84ef08f","accessControl_ssim":["5f48fa61-c043-4c9d-a832-573141ec11ba"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The impact of a short-term missions trip on the development of selected intercultural competencies among Brazilian seminary students"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:03:26Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:12:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a2d768c3-595b-4396-9533-8f1bd611f4de"],"hasLease_ssim":["f4292060-3500-40ac-8bb6-ee29819403bd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["James E Plueddemann"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin D Bradford"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Short-term missions","Missionaries--Training of","Intercultural communication"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Biblical evidence and sojourner research suggest that intercultural sensitivity and boldness are relevant intercultural competencies for missionaries. Self-reporting, participant observation, national informant observations, and pre- and post-internship testing involving the Intercultural Competency Scale were used for evaluation. Two control groups were also utilized. Few students evidenced growth in intercultural sensitivity. The internship apparently deflated the cultural expectations of others. Considerable growth was noted in adventuresomeness, though not verbal boldness.
