A change in understanding of lay ministry is necessary to overcome the inactivity or passivity of the laypersons.  This requires a change from a consciousness based on the Confucian tradition to the Christian idea based on the Bible and Christian tradition. This project suggests a better understanding of ministry and church office, educational programs, and important implications that are necessary for the Korean Church to activate lay ministry. Yet they know little or nothing at all about the beliefs and practices of each other.  Both claim to embody a universal message intended by God for the salvation of humankind.  How do both diagnose the human situation? What is the saving work of God that both believe and proclaim would change the human situation and restore authentic humanity?  What do they have in common? How do they differ?  The purpose of this project has been to explore possible answers to these key questions and to do pastoral reflection on such answers. The thesis seeks to develop an appropriate understanding of the saving work of God in both religious communities and proposes dialogue as a way to share theological insights. A series of sermons was developed with the input from the project associates to help the Korean congregation understand the Christian message in the context of Korean shamanistic culture and to equip them as ministers for God and to others. The methodology consists of five parts: the description of Jewish-Christian intermarriage in the United States; a discussion of the chavurah movement in the contemporary Jewish scene; a history of the founding of the Interfaith Chavurah for Liberal Judaism in Greater Hartford; the synthesis of a goal attainment model based on the works of Donald Metz and Talcott Parsons; and, the account of the ICLJ's first year and analysis of its achievements.  Although the ICLJ was founded as a conventional congregation, its identity sometimes became ambivalent and bordered on an informal support group.
