It is based on perceptions that indicate a lack of understanding each holds of the other.  Military chaplains are often perceived as not being fully in the ministry, while executive ministers have often not kept in contact with chaplains.  The chaplains experience a sense of frustration when church structures are not responsive to their desire to maintain active involvement. The author advanced the thesis that all pastoral relationships must begin with God, progress to the family, and ultimately to others.  He presented the thesis during eight days of training, utilizing evaluation instruments, Bible messages, discussion groups, and assigned reading.  He reinforced the project with a three-month program of planned family interaction, reading, and peer group meetings.  Most participants indicated considerable improvement in relationships with God.  Over fifty percent indicated improved family relationships. The author states that both subjective (affective) and objective (cognitive) empathy are essential kinds of empathy in the development of mature empathy. They are: 1. does the course provide helpful tools for meta-communication; 2. does the course provide opportunity for interaction, lead to engagement, and allow for transformation; 3. does the course enable and encourage hope; 4. is the course synergistic; and 5. does the course provide for the building of trust sufficient to meet the level of threat to be experienced by participants.
