A pre-test/post-test design is employed to test the hypothesis that there would be improvement in the areas of: 1) affective communication; 2) problem solving communication; and 3) global stress.  The 'Marital Satisfaction Inventory' is used before the weekend and ten weeks later to determine whether change occurs. Test results are supplemented by four individual interviews. These cases demonstrate that such persons, regardless of impairment, can grow through experience of God's love in trustful interpersonal relationships.  The cases also show that, in spite of recent improvement, some persons continue to be neglected and abused in institutions. The guidelines/strategies were developed during a care-giving ministry that was in operation from January 1972 through December 1987.  The summary and results are based on data compiled through the use of a guided interview format.  Interview questions were used at the beginning and end of the program.  An assessment of the program's effectiveness indicated that the program was a success.  This project is written to elevate the lives of poor Black single mothers.  Its roots are embedded in developing relationships and caring for a segment of our community that is all but forgotten, the inner-city or urban America.  The basic premise is that relationships are the keys to changing lives. Regardless of the plight of people, everyone wants to be in relationship with someone whom he or she can respect and trust. Research for the project includes: a review of Methodist involvement in higher education and a survey of chaplains at midwestern colleges, which lists their satisfactions and frustrations as well as their perceptions of the effectiveness of their programs.  The author provides a statement of theological foundations for campus ministry. The project outlines the traditional Jewish approaches as well as the human and practical realities of three particular rites of passage. The author used this information to develp a theology of the family which adapts to the irregular schedules of such families. The theology is based on the concept of the covenant.  It focuses on the strengthening of and development of the relationships in the family, rather than on the preservation of set roles.  The family structure is seen as flexible and adaptive. This exploratory study is conducted with one Army battalion from Fort Knox, Kentucky, that participates in an extended field exercise at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California. Students were evaluated by empirical observation, that involved the student, a peer, and adviser, and the discipler, and reproducibility in a second small group.  The students practiced relational skills and the spiritual disciplines of: daily prayer, Bible reading, time stewardship, group accountability and journal keeping.  The discipler served as a mentor and as a model for the disciplines.
