Beginning with the assumption that the core issue preventing authentic conversation is a lack of a framework and basic tools that provide purpose and comfort in the interaction, the proposed solution for fostering authenticity in communication is to implement basic \"ground rules\" for small group discussions based on the principles of humility and curiosity, rooted in the theological concepts of forbearance and a scriptural understanding of the body of Christ found in 1 Corinthians 12. The project investigates how setting a common goal (intentionally living into/as the diverse “body of Christ”) and ground rules (forbearance, humility, curiosity) at the outset of group interaction could lead to more authentic individual contributions to conversations in a faith setting. Concepts were presented in a series of four discussion forums and relevant conversation skills were practiced in pairs or small groups. Data collected from observations of the forums, responses of participant surveys and follow up questions, indicate that participants did increase in their comfort with difficult conversation settings and topics after being introduced to a theological framework and the concepts of humility and curiosity, supporting the hypothesis. It is hoped that practice of this intentional engagement will build a more authentic representation of the body of Christ within the Church and model respectful disagreement within a diverse community for the wider world. \r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-NC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["katerascoe@yahoo.com"],"_version_":1865180883840925696,"timestamp":"2026-05-14T16:11:44.370Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"288bb623-deb3-48b5-ac6d-dde8d4f299d8","accessControl_ssim":["8e18179f-1144-4cae-9e8b-fd92ecd8a85c"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["When did we see you hungry: saving the church by serving the world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5df5e488-c202-4644-b6a6-31b80aead481"],"hasLease_ssim":["004b39f0-803b-4cd6-af8e-95aafdbdfa24"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. At the same time churches are taking this transactional approach, “none” is the fastest growing religion in the United States marking the church’s ongoing decline. In their work we: a) hear from predominantly white congregations’ leaders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about how they and their congregations see their work with people living in poverty, b) engage in a theological dialogue with multiple researchers on what the Bible has to say about poverty in Deuteronomy, Ruth, the Prophets, and the Parables of Jesus, c) examine two current movements to get congregations out of their buildings and into their communities, d) look at the relational models that have influenced my secular work in poverty, and e) hear from two leaders in African American and Latino churches about how they engage with people living in poverty. Finally, incorporating elements from all these touchpoints, I lay out a path for church leaders to move their churches to relational models with people living in poverty, not to play the role of “Good Samaritan,” but because the church itself is in need of saving and has much to learn in and from the neighborhoods and communities it generally avoids."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860336331718656,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:27:20.331Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5c5815ad-5874-4195-9427-f116f408226e","accessControl_ssim":["04fa9f31-e423-4f8e-ae95-16de4ebb87ce"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Won’t you be my neighbor?: creating an interconnected onsite and online Christian community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:27:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["14c386c7-f344-4b80-812e-aa4af2a7fc46"],"hasLease_ssim":["d2691b59-aee4-4719-b8e3-28c51195054c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Published at the height of the COVID19 pandemic with all the research and writing completed before the outbreak, this work examines how (and where) American church communities can gather as guided by our continually Creating Creator. From Islam’s inception, female scholars have played a crucial role in nurturing women’s religious identity and spiritual connection. However, today in the American Muslim community, the presence of female scholars and spiritual guides remains largely absent in most local communities, limiting opportunities for women to access religious mentorship and leadership. By examining two historical female scholarly archetypes—their early lives, teaching methods, and approaches to spiritual modeling—this analysis identifies the factors that granted them religious authority while also exploring the diversity in their educational, cultural, and social strategies to enhance religious connectedness among women and their communities. The study is underpinned by the framework of Spiritual Modeling by Doug Osman and Carl Thoresen, along with Syed Attas’s Islamic Education model, which exemplify the necessity of interpersonal relationships between teachers and students, fostering women’s spiritual growth through modeling. By analyzing historical practices, this research addresses these contemporary realities of female religious authority. The study concludes with recommendations for institutions to better engage and support local female scholars and learned women, ultimately aiming to strengthen women’s spiritual identity and communal belonging.
