Research in local church ministry relationships determines how poor relationships affect the mission and purpose of the church. Extensive materials on local church relationships and the theory of ministry relationships are available.  However, little practical material on improving relationships is available.  The research reveals that the hindrance of local church ministry by poor relationships between clergy and laity is a Protestant-wide problem.  Primary resources suggest a biblical and theoretical model for the improvement of ministry relationships.  The model proposes small groups which is the nominal group technique. One reason for this interest is that conflict can cause dysfunctional and functional effects in any congregation.  The theological, social, andragogical, and methodological approaches to the study of conflict management and reconciliation undergird the development of a six-module seminar.  This seminar exposes ministers to skills which aid interpersonal relationships: listening, assertiveness, conflict resolution, collaborative problem-solving, and skill selection. The research is informed by a critical review of adult development theories and by theological images appropriate to middle adulthood.  The method includes a written questionnaire. Such models are ineffective in a small church setting.  Yet, there is little information available regarding the power, authority and leadership in small volunteer organizations.  This project uses interviews, observation, surveys and experience to explore the laity-clergy leadership dynamics of small churches.  It finds that: pastors are valued as persons before professionals; key leaders sense and articulate group needs and help the group use resources to meet needs; goals are accomplished by attending to the maintenance of relationships. The thesis is that an enlightened understanding of conflict and the development of certain communicative skills can significantly affect how the parishioner perceives conflict and thus how he or she will behave in conflictive situations thereby reducing the strained interpersonal relationships and alienation that often follows in the wake of the conflict.  A conflict skills curriculum was developed for the Ardmore Seventh-Day Adventist Church.  Participants were volunteers from the congregation who met weekly for a total of 8 sessions. They were tested prior to the seminar and again at the end. A control group was used for the purpose of comparison. The question addressed was, Will a seminar on conflict change the participants' attitude and feelings about conflict. Military chaplains are often perceived as not being fully in the ministry, while executive ministers have often not kept in contact with chaplains.  The chaplains experience a sense of frustration when church structures are not responsive to their desire to maintain active involvement. This is the psycho-spiritual basis for pastoral care ministry. Achieving relationships, boiling down the problem, and coping actively are the phases of a crisis counseling paradigm.
