Not many churches have a well-defined plan to promote their members’ ongoing spiritual formation. Yet many pastors in the Reformed tradition have discovered a vision for spiritual formation and renewal in the writings of Gordon-Conwell theologian Richard Lovelace. Lovelace’s Dynamics of Spiritual Life (1979) has been credited by pastors including Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian, New York City) as the most influential book in their philosophy of ministry and church strategy. However, Lovelace’s work was generally theoretical and remains unknown to modern leaders. This study asks: How do pastors and leaders in the Reformed traditions, specifically between ages of 35-50, apply the renewal principles of Lovelace in the life of their churches? Further, how has Lovelace’s vision for spiritual renewal been realized in these congregations?\r\n\r\nThis study will include a review of literature focused on three key areas to understand in promoting spiritual renewal in Reformed congregations: (1) Spiritual renewal according to Richard Lovelace, particularly in the areas of prayer, community, and mission; (2) the apostle Paul’s theology of spiritual life, especially the gospel, spiritual life, regeneration, the Holy Spirit, resurrection, prayer, community, and mission; and (3) organizational and congregational culture, including how churches can promote their desired values, behaviors, and practices in congregational life.\r\n\r\nThis study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors and leaders from various Reformed churches and ministries who are either familiar with Lovelace’s theories or have been unknowingly shaped by them. The methods of qualitative research are detailed, the process and strengths of qualitative research are discussed, and the researcher’s position and the limitations of the study are acknowledged.\r\n\r\nThe interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: (1) How do pastors in Reformed churches describe their theology of spiritual renewal? (2) How do they promote spiritual renewal among their congregants—in terms of prayer, community, and mission? (3) How do they integrate spiritual renewal into the culture of their congregation or organization? (4) In what ways and to what extent do their views of spiritual renewal compare to Lovelace’s theories?\r\n\r\nThe study concludes with a final discussion of Lovelace’s key insights and contributions, a summary of the findings, and recommendations for promoting spiritual renewal in churches in the future. The praxis of the study is to apply the findings to a multiethnic church planting residency in the city of St. Louis. By 2025, St. Louis plans to be the fastest growing foreign-born city in America. The God of scripture is a missionary God who created all people in his image to walk with him and learn to practice his gentle and humble heart, by faith alone, in Christ alone, so all families will be fully known through grace alone. The church in America in the last twenty-five years has experienced the largest religious shift in history toward pluralism. This rapid social change has led to isolation, spiritual pride, and loneliness. Furthermore, as the global Christian epicenter moves to the Global South, God is sending migrant ministry leaders to the American church as multiethnic church planters. This study walks with sojourners to listen, learn, love, lament, and establish migrant ministry leaders for a diaspora movement of multiethnic church planters in St. Louis. The Bible speaks to immigration from the heart of God. The three main areas of literature review for the study are: diaspora mission, multiethnic church planting, and developing culturally intelligent leaders. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eleven migrant ministry leaders from various denominations in St. Louis, representing six continents. The interviews gathered data using four research questions to identify the challenges that migrant ministry leaders face as sojourners, how the four movements of God’s story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration are lived in their ministry, the role of cultural intelligence in shaping the mature character of Christ, and how networks flourish in the immigrant communities of their city. The literature review focused on three key areas: the challenges multiethnic church planters face in rapid social change in America, the divine design of multiethnic motivations to practice the heart of Christ to love the sojourner, and the glory and affliction of those who network diaspora communities for the common good of the city. This study found three necessary components to multiethnic church planting in diaspora communities: the brokenness and beauty of diaspora mission, the glory and affliction of practicing the heart of Christ in multiethnic church planting, and the beautiful community of a diaspora network for the common good of the city. Related to these three components, this study also found that multiethnic ministry leaders face five major challenges: trust, trauma, isolation, conflict, and identity in cross cultural complexity. The Harvard study of five domains of Human Flourishing are also explored as a resource for building networked communities. The praxis of the study is to implement a residency training for migrant ministry leaders to seek the common good of the city of St. Louis by living the gospel to transform the idolatry of the city. Migrant ministry leaders multiplying whole life disciple making in beautiful community are redeeming the idols of parochial, prideful, and prejudicial attitudes. Migrant leaders are modeling humility in suffering for the American church to see the glory of the beatitudes lived as a city of ambassadors from all families of the earth. However, little research has examined senior pastors' experiences within and aspirations for CPNs. This study explored how senior pastors engage with CPNs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six senior pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America who have been actively involved in the Southwest Church Planting Network for over a decade. Four research questions guided this research: (1) What benefits do senior pastors experience when they engage with church-planting networks? (2) What challenges do senior pastors face when they engage with church-planting networks? (3) How do senior pastors navigate the challenges they face when they engage with church-planting networks? (4) What are senior pastors’ hopes for engagement with church-planting networks? The literature review examined lessons from the Book of Acts for contemporary CPN development, and research on network dynamics and organizational hierarchies. The key benefits identified included camaraderie, compelling vision, and access to funding. Primary challenges included diminished relational connections over time, loss of aspirational leadership, and complacency. Pastors navigated challenges through singular loyalty to the CPN. Hopes for the future centered around prayer, compelling rationale for planting, unified philosophy, clear metrics, new models, sustainable funding, dedicated leadership, training and coaching. These findings provide valuable insights for CPN leaders seeking to enhance senior pastor involvement.
