Much damage is done to the cause of Christ by internal conflict over authority and submission issues, especially in the North American Protestant sending faith mission boards. This thesis seeks to lay out a beginning working biblical theology of followership. Its conclusion is that Christian believers are called more to followership than leadership and a proper understanding of submission and obedience can aid greatly in the worldwide spread of the gospel. The thesis argues that the development and implementation of a biblical theology of submission and obedience will result in healthier, more sustaining, and effective missionaries and ministries. To illustrate such a statement, it will look at the early Society of Jesus under St. Ignatius of Loyola and the Moravian Brethren at Herrnhut under Count Nicholas Ludwig von Zinzendorf. Each will be explored as to their history, missionary movement and effectiveness, early documents, and spiritual practices. At the end of the study, ten recommendations will be presented to modern Protestant faith mission boards in order to help address the submission and authority issues they face."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129905521491968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:08.243Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:28:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:26:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"90a7dd94-4a22-42d4-9bba-9c858690cfd3","accessControl_ssim":["93fe348a-5b41-4066-a62d-5b71066ab586"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Burnout, Jesuits, and grace"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:28:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:22:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["13c95e52-5690-4fa9-b42b-ae60246a35dc"],"hasLease_ssim":["78aacdfe-8eae-4d23-994a-6b16707a8e4f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lawrence Dorsey"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Neil Cahill"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Mental health","Teachers--Psychology","Burn out (Psychology)","Jesuits"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The aim of this project was to measure burnout of Jesuit clergy, contrasting it with burnout of laic faculty teaching in same academic milieus. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire. Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control). The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples. It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits. There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator. The pressure of working with people of another culture, and the lack of social and cultural resources are especially significant items."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135060582203392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:45:04.492Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:06:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:55:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"442e1840-518e-44a0-b97a-bde94759e97a","accessControl_ssim":["1363be80-1417-4ad5-b552-74f86a5c95b9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An Augustinian directed retreat"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:06:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:06:31Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["729d7216-d058-4f08-8ac4-14b0b3f430a0"],"hasLease_ssim":["a2c21df3-7c52-4bc6-a336-68ba58a9a4ea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Boston University"],"advisor_tesim":["J Robert Nelson"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Edgar A Bourque"],"publisher_tesim":["Boston University School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual retreats","Meditation--Christianity","Augustinians","Jesuits","Spirituality","Spiritual exercises"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The Augustinian directed retreat is a private retreat in the manner of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola.
