In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins observes how effective leaders demonstrate a paradoxical blend of professional will and personal humility. This same paradox is reflected in Jesus' grace-giving, truth-telling leadership. He perfectly modeled how to relate to people redemptively while not compromising in matters of truth and righteousness. This project details a process for enhancing leadership effectiveness by cultivating self-awareness among church leaders in regard to professional will and personal humility. The model that is identified is described as a 'hospitable, eschatological welcome.' The five pericopes studied contain both examples and teaching from the earthly ministry of Jesus, demonstrating the alignment that existed between his words and actions on this subject. In particular, the pericopes center around Jesus' controversial ministry to the sinners and tax collectors, the criticism he received from the Pharisees, and his commission to the disciples. In addition, table fellowship, as an element of the oriental hospitality, is explored as the cultural context for that which was occurring in the key passages of study. The history of God's salvation plan is the theological backdrop, beginning with God's heart for the stranger in the Old Testament and ending with a look at the cross as the most powerful example of the hospitality of God toward man. The model identified presents a clear pattern for current evangelistic efforts that will aid the church in taking advantage of present opportunities in the twenty-first century."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b2ad2862-737d-4dde-8145-b9b6962ac5f3"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132626326650880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:06:23.005Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:21:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:38:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"52b5533b-cb25-4151-a30d-a79988ede325","accessControl_ssim":["7efa72b9-92a8-4fb3-ac5c-88a57863df5c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership that cares: how intentional friendship revolutionizes leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:21:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:33:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["13208e98-e442-4280-86a9-6689e5c5463d"],"hasLease_ssim":["310cf9f9-9e85-4ec0-9e20-ef30f6bb02e5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["J Kent Edwards"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew R Messner"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Friendship","Jesus Christ as an example to be followed"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A great deal is written on the importance and effectiveness of servant leadership, based on the ministry and model of Jesus. But Jesus did not stop with servant leadership. He took his leadership with the disciples to the next level when he stated, 'I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from the Father I have made known to you (John 15:15). This thesis develops the idea that leadership modeled after the ministry of Jesus, which includes the ingredient of deep friendship, is more effective than leadership that does not include friendship. In developing this idea, this thesis examines the reasons leaders have often avoided friendship and how doing this has compromised their effectiveness. It presents research from over one hundred surveys, showing how friendship has been central in the development of leaders (both clergy and laity alike). It also examines historical and contemporary writings on friendship to support this idea. This thesis shows that intentional friendship results in increased effectiveness and is essential for a leader who strives to follow Christ."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130881352531968,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:38.868Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:26:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5bb35975-113c-4fb8-abdd-721d0af8d2f6","accessControl_ssim":["a0354f42-a4f2-4d03-81ba-492ef240e638"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Transformed into His image: leading people on the journey to Christlikeness"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:49:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9ac45319-9e04-4633-a71a-22ef126005d4"],"hasLease_ssim":["346e9b88-6498-4e1c-bec5-3fea151fc03c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Pamela Baker Powell"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David Kyle Foster"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry"],"subject_tesim":["Sexual abuse victims","Jesus Christ as an example to be followed","Pastoral counseling","Sex--Religious aspects--Christianity","Spiritual formation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Drawing on a survey by the author of 500 pastors, leaders in ministries and Christian counselors, this project provides a course correction for those who help lead people on the journey to Christlikeness in the ministry of 'spiritual formation' especially those who work with sexually broken people.
