As interviews from hospital chaplains converse with recent research on negative faith coping, and with St. Thérèse of Lisieux's experience of pulmonary tuberculosis and a trial of faith during her last eighteen months, chronicled in Story of a Soul, twelve themes emerge. The study considers theological issues concerning Jewish identity in the Church and their place in the economy of salvation. The methodology consists of five parts: the description of Jewish-Christian intermarriage in the United States; a discussion of the chavurah movement in the contemporary Jewish scene; a history of the founding of the Interfaith Chavurah for Liberal Judaism in Greater Hartford; the synthesis of a goal attainment model based on the works of Donald Metz and Talcott Parsons; and, the account of the ICLJ's first year and analysis of its achievements.  Although the ICLJ was founded as a conventional congregation, its identity sometimes became ambivalent and bordered on an informal support group. The teachings of Jesus continued the key concepts of Judaism for Christianity.  A course of study emphasizing key concepts in both systems develops awareness of commonalities.  This study affirms that Christians can gain understanding of their Jewish heritage through the teachings of Jesus. The commonalities provide a base sufficient for collaborative social action between Jews and Christians on behalf of all humanity. Its purpose was to engage people of faith in significant encounters with the other, as presented through these different communities of faith.  Elements of the study included lectures about the history and founding personalities of the religions; class discussion and personal sharing; experiences with food; meetings with spiritual leaders and believers; and opportunities of worship from each tradition.  In addition we received materials and documents pertinent to our own faith tradition.
