Ibn Khaldun posits that the rise and fall of dynasties-and history itself- are cyclical, not linear in trajectory. By the 19th-century, the Ottoman Empire had maintained a prosperous reign of 500 years captivating European travelers, diplomats, merchants, and tourists with a mix of fascination, intrigue, and as some scholars argue, ‘imperial envy’, that contributed to the production and curation of knowledge of the ‘Orient’.  Within the framework of Ibn Khaldun’s theory, both ‘asabiyyah and Orientalism offer two compelling perspectives: one, as a lens for viewing the rise of the British Empire through a colonial framework, and two, as a means to understand the Ottoman Empire’s response to and, at times, assimilation of Eurocentric ideologies surrounding modernity as a form of colonial resistance in comparison with the British Empire in the 19th century."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/a6fde082-e6c1-47ad-a60a-ca98911cccdc?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["a6fde082-e6c1-47ad-a60a-ca98911cccdc"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["a6fde082-e6c1-47ad-a60a-ca98911cccdc"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["heather.elsayed@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836568215092723712,"timestamp":"2025-07-02T20:25:37.062Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:28:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:16:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2f42edc3-6111-440c-8520-46692ef98f9b","accessControl_ssim":["0b8ae514-d828-456a-bccc-b2f0ea7f2fdc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An exploration of how action science, action inquiry and communities of practice contribute to Christian ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:28:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:30:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b0c7a728-e242-4b08-a55d-f26488f2b633"],"hasLease_ssim":["5a468108-7cf6-400f-9b1b-e8135aa0984e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Julieanne S Hallman"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael Burns"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Knowledge, Sociology of","Church work","Social sciences--Research"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This qualitative study explores how social science contributes to Christian ministry.  Principles and insights of the action science model developed by Argyris and Schon (1974) and the ideas of Wenger on informal 'communities of practice' (1998) undergird three ministry-based explorations. A  Practicum group, a Roman Catholic group and an Elementary School Faculty were tested for evidence of a community of practice and any personal or communal transformations.  The results demonstrate that communities of practice do exist in religious settings and can be a seedbed for emerging practices and that action science provides tools to complement existing religious disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133245468835840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:16:13.465Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Thesis","hits":1,"label":"Thesis"},{"value":"Unknown","hits":1,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Elsayed, Heather","hits":1,"label":"Elsayed, Heather"},{"value":"Michael Burns","hits":1,"label":"Michael Burns"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Knowledge, Sociology of","hits":2,"label":"Knowledge, Sociology of"},{"value":"Church work","hits":1,"label":"Church work"},{"value":"Colonialism","hits":1,"label":"Colonialism"},{"value":"Great Britain -- History -- 19th century","hits":1,"label":"Great Britain -- History -- 19th century"},{"value":"Ibn Khaldūn, 1332-1406","hits":1,"label":"Ibn Khaldūn, 1332-1406"},{"value":"Imperialism","hits":1,"label":"Imperialism"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":1,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":1,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":2,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2001","hits":1,"label":"2001"},{"value":"2025","hits":1,"label":"2025"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":1,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"},{"value":"Master's Theses","hits":1,"label":"Master's Theses"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Master of Arts","hits":1,"label":"Master of Arts"},{"value":"Unknown","hits":1,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[{"value":"Islamic Studies","hits":1,"label":"Islamic Studies"}],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Andover Newton Theological School","hits":1,"label":"Andover Newton Theological School"},{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[{"value":"Bayan Islamic Graduate School","hits":1,"label":"Bayan Islamic Graduate School"}],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":1,"label":"Atla RIM"},{"value":"Chicago Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Chicago Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":2,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
