This purpose was accomplished by the development of an instrument which was applied in four local church settings.  The instrument contains sixteen statements related to interpersonal communication in the local parish.  Each pastor involved was to complete a self-evaluation and compare that evaluation with those completed by selective members of the congregation. Also included was teaching on the nascent church, contemporary churches, and priesthood of believers. The data from one hundred clergy and lay leaders reveals that both clergy and lay participate fully in three primary functions of ministry.  Priest's tend to emphasize the ordering and meaning giving functions, while laity emphasize the serving function.  Clergy exercise leadership in the ministries of worship, education, and pastoral care.  Laity lead in the ministries of stewardship, evangelism, and service. Two control groups of 10 people and a training group of 15 were enlisted to participate in the training process.  The object of the project was to move the training group away from the low control group and toward the high control group.  The training strategy used a three pronged approach: students participate in weekly lectures; homework assignments; and experience with a variety of ongoing ministries. In developing mutual ministries of pastoral care an overview of methodology and the actual training experience for one local congregation are described.  Included in these ten sessions are theoretical definitions of pastoral care, biblical and theological underpinnings for caring ministries, and pragmatic training skills for listening and responding pastorally. Archdiocese of Washington (DC)","Paulist Fathers","Laity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents a planning and action project which adapted the missionary preaching tradition of the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle (known as the Paulists) to the setting of contemporary Roman Catholic parishes in the Washington, DC, area.  Parish-based evangelization was shaped by contemporary Roman Catholic concepts of parish, lay ministry, and evangelization.  The project consisted of 1) involving parishes, 2) forming lay evangelization committees, and 3) developing evangelization activities.  This was done in four parishes in the Washington, DC area, between May 1988 and June 1989. Research showed that parishes became involved and people were reached by evangelization projects. Rural churches encounter particular dynamics as change and rapid transitional forces occur.  This research/action/reflection model examines one rural parish in-depth, and three other churches in moderate detail, as they move to address their transitional circumstances and position themselves for future ministry via a deliberate planning process.  Three theses with regard to future planning summarize the author's findings: the role of the pastor; authority and power for planning; and membership consensus of mission and future vision. Thirteen church members participated in a program of study and planning.  The study involved five sermons, ten classes, and four planning sessions.  The study group developed and the church approved a statement of church purpose with goals and objectives for 1990. Through observation and reflection, participating pastors clarified and defined their perceptions of their churches.  They interpreted their observations through stories, characterizations, reflection upon interviews and the development of metaphors. The project tested a model of pastoral leadership focused upon the roles of 'reflective guide' and 'mission initiator.' Analysis of the pastors' perceptions and definitions of ministry issues confirmed that when identity is clarified, potentials and boundaries are seen more clearly.
