If so, is it also possible for leadership style to have a positive effect on members' participation?  The purpose of this project is to determine the relationship between pastoral leadership style and church membership participation and to design a model of leadership style that can enhance membership participation.  The project affirmed that style can be a contributing factor to membership participation but there is not one style that will always enhance membership participation. A curriculum was designed that consisted of six sessions on the biblical and theological bases for shared ministry.  A study of similar churches was conducted in four sessions.  Recommendations to increase lay involvement were formulated in the final two sessions.  The project was evaluated by the experimental and descriptive survey methods. Results indicate that: lay people can be effectively engaged in theological reflection; lay training committees can be significant vehicles for developing new partnership perspectives in the church and seminary; and that interaction developed within the process can have transforming effects upon relationships within the church, and can assist in refocusing the sense of calling for clergy, seminarians and laity. This study involved the placement process within the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida during the past five years. Thirty parishes were evaluated after placement of clergy to determine the matching process' success.  The result of the examination indicated that the process works when followed carefully and without circumvention. The pastor made one home visit before the ceremony of confirmation and the second visit afterwards.  The information gleaned from these conversations shed light on the inner life of the families, their systems, traditions, hurts and hopes. Surveys were distributed to families and small groups before and after two special worship series, to evaluate the congregation's worship life.  Each series responded to needs expressed in the initial survey. Leadership is to be understood as not only the direction or course, but also the style used to give such direction.  Transformational leadership is the reciprocal relationship between leader and led which transforms both of them to higher levels of conduct and growth.  That is consistent with the biblical teaching of servant-leadership and goal attainment in the ministry to which all Christian are called. Biblical, theological, and contemporary scholarship on the subject of transformational leadership is analyzed.  In the field of scholarship particular attention is given to the work of George MacGregor Burns. In the treatment of biblical and theological issues particular address is made to churches in the Reformed and Presbyterian tradition.
