The final document confirms the value of working with non-ordained laity who proved to be articulate and critically accurate in understanding theological and philosophical principles of congregational life. Its process and techniques can be adapted for use in equipping lay caregivers in congregations. A mentorship program to train laity to preach in the context of the local church is an effective way to realize lay potential.  Biblical and theological principles that undergird an attempt to equip the laity were delineated.  Insights were gleaned from anthropology that inform efforts to communicate the gospel cross-culturally. The case study method was employed.  Equipping laity is risky and time-consuming, and results are not always immediately apparent. Volunteers received twelve hours of training and participated in three months of supervised ministry.  Those workers developed care strategies to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of assigned clients. Stage One (Attending) examines literature concerning tradition (the doctrine of Imago Dei), experience (the feminist theology of Letty Russell), and culture (the recent work on codependency).  Stage Two (Asserting) posits a shift in the understanding of the doctrine of Imago Dei and develops a theology of self-esteem; and, Stage Three (Acting) describes a thirty-week course designed and tested as a means of systemtic intervention in an Episcopal congregation. The results of this intervention are measured as pre- and posttests by using the Secord-Jourard Self Cathexis Scale and the Gecas 12-item Semantic Differential Scale (both highly reliable and valid instruments).
