The method involved a sermon series on spiritual gifts, a course on spiritual gift identification, individual consultations with the pastor, and placement in ministry opportunities.  The project resulted in more members serving in ministry.  A lay ministry of Congregational Care was implemented.  The Nominating Committee adopted an improved method of matching members with ministry opportunities.  Twenty people went on a mission trip to Puerto Rico. The idea originated from Luke 10:2 where Jesus says: 'The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few, therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'  The project method utilized parish education, recruitment and training of parish callers, prayer, visitation and training of new laborers.  One hundred potential laborers were invited to become active in a specific ministry and sixty-two persons agreed. The project will be conducted in three phases.  The first phase will include five Sunday morning messages addressing the nature of organizational change in the life of churches, ministry through spiritual gifts, and the development of team ministries.  The messages will discuss ministry structures found in Scripture and the basic operational principles by which they function.  The second phase will focus on five Sunday evening seminars.  The seminars will examine Sunday morning sermons in light of Garden Oaks Baptist Church's committee structure with a view toward developing a structure based on a team-ministry approach. Through interaction and dialogue, seminar participants will evaluate Garden Oaks Baptist Church's committee structure and pursue development of a team-ministry structure based on one's spiritual gifts.  The third phase will be designed to enlist a study team of twelve people from participants of the first and second phases. The development of a team of lay persons to do pastoral care ministry is in process here. It is theologically sound, practical, and can be adapted in any size congregation. This report traces its development from concept to implementation. It provides basic principles, procedures and structure that can be used to give pastoral care in meta-church (small group) style to an entire congregation, involve lay persons in meaningful ministry, and prevent clergy burnout. A sequence of learning events were developed for their spiritual growth and leadership skills.  A Pro-Active Research Method and the Reflection-Action Model helped the pastor and leaders analyze the congregation's needs which led to action plans for proclamation and social services.  The Research Model afforded the pastor and leaders to make decisions based on their assessment of community needs. Eight lessons were taught to a group of fifteen members who are financially committed to the church, but are not presently involved in a ministry to members or the community. These lessons were developed on the foundations of scripture, theology, and the principles of formative education. It is the intent of this project to affect the attitudes, dispositions, values, and behavior of the participants with the end result being an increased desire to develop, and implement ministries for the Longview Heights S.D.A. Church. The Longview Heights S.D.A. Church is a traditional, one hundred year old, inner-city church.
