Through a seven-week training course, the author sought to cultivate, within those participating, the ability to interact with others in ways that would enliven and enhance their spiritual and emotional well-being. The author will seek to assist those who have had an encounter with evil and suffering to interpret their own experience.  Biblical and philosophical knowledge will be integrated with their personal experience as a means of equipping them to provide care for others who are currently suffering.  The project proposes that attempts to address the problem of evil and suffering through theodicy fail to provide both the adequate theoretical answers and the practical comfort sufferers need.  The project further proposes that the personal experience of those who have suffered uniquely qualifies them to address the suffering of others.  The concepts of a suffering God and the ethical demands of the incarnation will be presented as a basis for a philosophy of ministry to fellow sufferers. The power of personal testimony, the power of presence, the process of grief, and the pursuit of a mature faith will be offered as a means of preparing individuals to provide care for fellow sufferers. The retreat would teach the mission team members about Waterbury and orient them for the upcoming week of day camp.  As a result of the project the Waterbury Baptist Ministries church members' self esteem increased and their level of hopelessness decreased, thus finding their place of service in the church. Transforming laypersons into leaders required seeking, encouraging, equipping, and deploying them in ministry. Spiritual formation and spiritual gifts were the primary focus. Spiritual gifts inventories were used to determine the giftedness of laity. Lectures were used in the Wesleyan class meeting format, expressing the Wesleyan spirit, supported by tools helpful in accomplishing the desired result. The spiritual gifts inventory and two evaluation questionnaires were used. Methods used to accomplish the goal of the project included the use of an equipping module that helped to build the concept of team ministry and provide a foundation of knowledge.  This was done through a series of weekly seminars.  Qualitative surveys, pre- and post-tests, as well as questionnaires, were used.  Responses of the congregation indicate that the model of team ministry resonates well with the church and with Scripture. It focuses upon the unique influence of Korean han as becoming an impediment for development transforming lay leadership in the Korean-American churches.  Han-ridden laity have suffered from the negative symptoms of han such as anger, vengefulness, resentfulness, helplessness, anxiety, psychoenurosis, and so on. Because of a negative effect of han, the immigrant churches have difficulties in mobilizing the human resources in terms of lay ministry. It is necessary to overcome the broken relationship with the Triune God and neighbors. This dissertation offers a particular way of lay leadership development by renewing the broken relationship. The essential identity of this dissertation is formed by the word 'intermediary leader.' Even though he/she was a han-ridden person, an intermediary leader takes care of his/her followers as the wounded healer. This dissertation attempts to critically reflect upon the application of H. R. Niebuhr's thought of 'responsible being' and Simon Weil's idea of 'intermediary.' This project investigates what Korean han is and what the influences of han are. For transforming the influences of han into the power of lay leadership, it suggests han-poori ministry as transforming lay ministry.  Han-poori ministry is designed for releasing han-ridden laity from the bondage of han.  It is developed in several components such as 'awakening step,' 'disentanglement step,' and 'engagement step.' Through these steps, the han-ridden laity are enabled to be intermediary lay leaders.
