As the traditional family structure continues to change and the secular world becomes more sophisticated in its appeal, the church faces the danger of becoming irrelevant to today's young person.  In this project the biblical and psychological basis of youth ministry is examined.  A youth ministry model entertaining young people is contrasted with a model that seeks to involve the teenagers themselves in ministry.  A small group of senior high students on the south side of Atlanta are questioned concerning their level of spiritual commitment before and after a six-week ministry project involving them in an evangelistic outreach to other teens. Adult evaluators give their opinion of the effectiveness of the ministry project and an outside youth ministry expert reviews the basis of the ministry model used. Seven persons were trained for nine weeks in caregiving skills, crisis recognition, theological backgrounds, and self-understanding.  Six sermons focused the congregation on the Christian's response to various human needs.  The project resulted in personal growth and self-awareness for those equipped as crisis caregivers.  The development of the crisis care team multiplied the ministry of the professional clergy. Each participant covenanted with other group members and developed personal learning goals related to ministry currently engaged in.  A theological and an educational base is described. Those workers developed care strategies to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of assigned clients. To determine the needs of the organization's students and prepare them for ministry, a questionnaire was designed and used as the principle source of research.  The project succeeded in determining the needs of the students in the organization. Because this is true, the planning of corporate worship must be a priority.  The laity should be included in worship planning.  The author equipped eight members of a local church to plan and evaluate worship services during a nine-week training process.  The worship team has made a positive impact in the life of the church. Stage One (Attending) examines literature concerning tradition (the doctrine of Imago Dei), experience (the feminist theology of Letty Russell), and culture (the recent work on codependency).  Stage Two (Asserting) posits a shift in the understanding of the doctrine of Imago Dei and develops a theology of self-esteem; and, Stage Three (Acting) describes a thirty-week course designed and tested as a means of systemtic intervention in an Episcopal congregation. The results of this intervention are measured as pre- and posttests by using the Secord-Jourard Self Cathexis Scale and the Gecas 12-item Semantic Differential Scale (both highly reliable and valid instruments).
