The paper discribes how this need is being met in two smaller membership churches through the use and evaluation of 'Body Builders: Exercises in Leadership Development for Elders of Smaller Membership Churches,' a training manual written for the project.  The vital characteristics of smaller membership churches and the nature and origin of the office of elder are presented that these elders and churches may more effectively function in the upbuilding of the body of Christ. Supporting research includes a study of scriptural foundations for koinonia, the unique fellowship of Christians in partnership with Christ; reports on five examples of Christian community and elements of koinonia in group life; and examination of leadership styles which enhance koinonia. A study manual was developed as a compendium of ecclesiological research.  Organized under the heads Failure, Foundation, Focus, Form and Function, it comprised 30 theses or statements for discussion with supporting material.  Bible reference sheets were also developed.  The manual was used in a weekend retreat with a small group of church lay leaders. Pre- and post-retreat testing indicated considerable improvement in participants' understanding of the nature and mission of the church. Bethany Church, located in growing southern New Hampshire, developed a strategy stressing disciple-making rather than decision-making. Using community assessment and a congregational survey, Bethany created a paradigm to reclaim the evangelistic enterprise by: expanding the vision; equipping the people; targeting the audience; and incorporating the newcomer. The method pursued to gather data for this study was personal interviews guided by a pre-tested, uniform questionnaire. The conclusion reached was that the above thesis is true. The design is used as a teaching tool in the training of elected officers for their work which illuminates the importance of effective organizational management and theological integrity. Research focused on the nature and functioning of an embassy, the identification of the strengths and weaknesses of organizational models and the insights of Kingdom of God theology.  The model proved an effective means of helping officers understand and accept their responsibilities. Through survey and analysis of the self-understanding of a number of church lay leaders, the more significant factors are isolated and described. Results of the research indicate that family and sacramental factors are highest on the list of contributors to these leaders' development.
