The author studied six participants as they progressed through ACLDM by engaging in three phases of learning while in consultation with three supporting parties to determine if leadership growth occurred. The methodology used was primarily qualitative research and used methods of survey, observation and guided interviews to collect data. The research indicated that every participant experienced perceived growth while going through ACLDM. This research project addressed this deficiency. This research project examined two separate Dallas Theological Seminary Doctorate of Ministry pastoral leadership courses. The research method included a combination of questionnaires, interviews, and review of pertinent course materials. The courses chosen for this research were DM550 Effective Church Leadership (DM550) and DM521 Church Health, Leadership, and Multiplication (DM521). These two church pastoral leadership development courses currently and previously taught in the Doctorate of Ministry program at Dallas Theological Seminary were examined in order to identify the essential elements of a senior level strategic leadership development course that teaches church pastors how to lead and manage a local church. This project explored the essential elements of senior level strategic leadership to create a program to develop church pastors to lead and manage a local church. The essential elements included development and evaluation of a church's mission, vision and values, analysis and evaluation of a church's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, development of a strategic plan for implementing change, and developing a strategic plan for developing leaders. The project director researched the field of mentoring, identified the best practices, and developed a six-session workshop to train the selected men. Using qualitative research methosd the researcher demonstrated that the best practices found among secular organizations in pursuing diversity are effective when implemented in a large predominately white church. Field research consisted of surveys, focus groups, and interviews in three congregations. Research focused on the barriers and incentives to assuming a leadership role, characteristics of leaders, models for structuring leadership, and equipping the congregations to participate in leadership. The research showed the largest factor in engaging leadership is a personal invitation by a respected leader. This direct appeal counteracts a common fear of not being qualified.
