Congregational health demonstrated by longer tenures of church leaders and conflict with less intensity and better resolution has occurred as leaders understand and apply systems thinking, recognize the problems and issues in systems, and remain differentiated in difficult situations. The project accomplished these goals. Five leaders were selected and equipped in cognitive ability, skills and affect for six months.  This equipping process included six training sessions, implementing the core elements of small group ministry: effective leadership, good community environment, balanced small group activities into the small groups and individual monthly mentoring.  All the leaders demonstrated spiritual growth and improved their understanding of the concepts and practical skills of doing small group ministry. How well that transition takes place depends on the preparation for it. This dissertation project argues that there are attitudes and perspectives about church leadership that if they are in place and being lived out will make a leadership transition in a local church as seamless as possible. This project begins with a summary of the challenges faced by megachurch pastors. A chapter of biblical and historical considerations provides background material on the value of team ministry. Case studies reveal lessons learned through interviews, surveys, and onsite visits at churches that have incorporated a team-preaching model. The result was the formulation of a functioning and practical team-equipping process that focused on risk management. The project began by researching risk management. Upon completion of the research phase, the project director developed a curriculum of complete lesson plans and teaching material consisting of four training sessions to equip the team on risk management. The participants were evaluated before, during and after the study. The goal was to craft a rough draft statement of the church's purpose, mission, vision, and core values. This research showed integrating leadership and preaching facilitates pastors leading a congregation. A control group made up of core leadership was surveyed with an instrument designed to measure the group's ability to listen and comprehend a sermon. The same instrument measured the group's level of leadership awareness.
