People from around the world with different customs, values, and beliefs are now living in close proximity to each other. To effectively engage in ministry in such a multicultural context will require leaders to intentionally develop competencies for their intercultural journey. This research project examined how ten three-hour sessions of training delivered over a 16-week period impacted the intercultural competency of eighteen Christian leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds. Three conceptual models that were foundational in designing this training: Bennett's 'Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity' (Bennett 1998), Deardorff's 'Process Model of Intercultural Competence' (Deardorff 2006), and Berry's 'Model of Acculturation' (Berry 2005). Both the IDI assessment and participant feedback suggested a significant development of intercultural competency of the members of the study group, indicating that a training intervention such as this could increase a leader's motivation, cultural self-awareness, knowledge and skills enabling them to navigate the complexities of intercultural ministry. The findings also suggest the most effective components of the training and how they might be transferable to other intercultural training programs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133792013910016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:54.691Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:57:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"37177aee-d806-4c54-8f30-f215aff5c3d3","accessControl_ssim":["73c083ca-d5d8-46c4-aea6-d4980d8499f7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Overcoming cultural and systemic barriers: exploring how minority pastors overcome leadership challenges in majority culture congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:56:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:43:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9be3fb30-e4cb-4f86-b4b4-e1236976bc29"],"hasLease_ssim":["314e1918-c58b-4ec8-9757-cf1fb7002d6d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tasha D Chapman"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Edward S Koh"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Presbyterian Church--Clergy","Presbyterian Church in America","Minorities"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to understand how minority pastors overcome leadership challenges in majority culture congregations. Exploring this requires an understanding of personal struggles minority pastors encounter due to cultural differences, systemic barriers they encounter because of the pervasive influences of racialization in the American church, and the crucial role of the Caucasian leadership and congregants that impact the ministry of minority pastors in majority culture congregations. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six minority pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America. The review of literature and analysis of the six interviews focused on three key areas that provided insights to how minority pastors overcome leadership challenges. The three areas of focus were: minority leadership challenges, organizational culture, and multicultural leadership competencies. This study found that the complexity of racialized patterns in the American church must be addressed in order to effectively overcome personal and systemic leadership challenges and thrive in majority culture congregations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore how pastors use vulnerability in sermons to build the congregation's trust in their leadership. This study utilized a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews with six Reformed pastors with the primary preaching responsibility in their churches in the southeastern United States. Analysis of the literature and interview data examined how pastors assess the use of vulnerability in their sermons, how pastors perceive the relationship between preaching and trust, and how pastors determine the limits of vulnerability in their sermons to build trust in leadership. Findings from the study include the critical nature of a gospel-saturated culture for the vulnerability to build trust, the value of understanding the negotiation of interests through preaching to build trust, the necessary match of the public and priv ate communication from the senior leadership, and the clearly communicated intent of redemptive purpose of vulnerability to build trust."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130885652742144,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:38:42.969Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:05:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fbaf006f-44ab-4154-ad43-b7f83f63fb1e","accessControl_ssim":["273a2583-effb-4f87-a79c-e4075caea2f9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping selected leaders of First Baptist Church, Wooster, Arkansas, in small group effectiveness"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:55:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:19:20Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8fb91240-1a36-45e7-ac9b-42168a608bb3"],"hasLease_ssim":["65f5ea1a-f7f5-449d-9e84-e3b7570e96f9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Mike Miller"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matthew B Pryor"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Church work","Church group work","First Baptist Church (Wooster, Ark)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to equip a selected group of leaders at First Baptist Church, Wooster, Arkansas, in small group effectiveness.
