Alletzhauser interviewed active United methodists in local church ministries as a participant observer using open-ended and narrative therapy questions. The results demonstrate how stories of Support circulate in local churches despite denominational policies and statements of Non-support. The author researched opinions of biblical scholars and Christian theologians, interviewed gay and lesbian Christians, and studied three congregations in order to develop models of hospitality that welcome gay and lesbian people into the fellowship of United Methodist congregations. A trajectory of welcome for the stranger was developed, using the books of Ruth, Isaiah and Mark. That focus of inclusion offers a foundation for biblical and theological rationales for alternative understandings of hospitality and concrete expressions of welcome offered by actual congregations. Lesbians, a group which experiences a dual alienation (as women and as homosexual people), were the project's target group.  The two phases of the study were 1) the development of a planning team from the alienated which developed the encounter experience, and 2) the actual self encounter.
