In most congregations less than 3% of their membership attend the Sunday services. Many attempts to establish new forms of contemporary worship have failed, either because the approaches were too demanding and time consuming or because they were focused on limited target groups and therefore could not have an impact on the congregation as a whole. Based on a creative adaptation of the biblical and Lutheran liturgical heritage the author has developed and implemented a new form of worship that has proved to be effective, appealing and visionary. The primary teacher/catechesis is the liturgy of the Church. In the ancient church the process had four steps or stages: evangelization/inquiry or the precatechumenate, the catechumenate or catechesis, purification or enlightenment marked by the rites of Christian initiation, and finally mystagogy. This ancient four step process disappears sometime around the fifth century. The Roman Catholic Church's Second Vatican Council called for a recovery of the catechumenate which led to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. The RCIA is a set of rites which structure the four steps of the catechumenal process. This project is a survey of the past forty years of catechumenal practice and the implications for Presbyterians. This project is divided into four chapters which address: The recovery of the ancient practice in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and an analysis of the rites, the renewal of catechumenal practice and experimentation in the Episcopal Church in America, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the United Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church (USA), the theology of 'unified rites' in the Presbyterian Church particularly focusing on confirmation and admission to the Lord's Table, and strategizing about the renewal of baptism as preparation for catechumenal practice in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and raising implications of such practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135176738209792,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:55.267Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:41:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:40:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fa0c673c-8b98-47d1-9295-1c3ed31b7613","accessControl_ssim":["5b7c51c1-0027-42fd-b25e-b4e697f54f7b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Deconstruction and re-imagination of liturgy in a local congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:41:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:16:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2fe74ab9-3558-4099-8fdc-1c6fac2b9192"],"hasLease_ssim":["f75e5d23-594a-499d-9eef-530da055492e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Roy SteinhoffSmith"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charisa L Hunter-Crump"],"publisher_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["History","Postmodernism","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Christian liturgy is shaped by the metaphors for Jesus that have evolved through two thousand years of theological reflection. The project studies the form and movement of lament psalms and offers five theological insights. It traces the development of the Presbyterian rite in the United States and examines its liturgical shape and theology. It examines the various texts of the rite and assesses the extent to which they provide opportunity of lament. It concludes by suggesting how the rite might provide even more opportunity for lament and exploring five implications for ministry with the grieving."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135024983048192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:44:30.541Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:54:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:22:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1f6802b3-a922-4004-bf62-49f4c4634a72","accessControl_ssim":["4adf3072-ef64-428f-a3cc-e04035894fb2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'A present duty': Episcopal chaplains in Confederate service, 1861-1865"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T06:54:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:04:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6392b19c-60f9-4b1d-86c7-17371b9fe8ac"],"hasLease_ssim":["1996d372-ac1b-415e-9860-c6155205b3e5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["University of the South"],"advisor_tesim":["Marion Josiah Hatchett"],"year_tesim":["1998"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["George W Pursley"],"publisher_tesim":["University of the South School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["History","Quintard, C T (Charles Todd), 1824-1898","American Civil War (United States : 1861-1865)","Episcopal Church","Military chaplains","McKim, Randolph Harrison, 1842-1920","Clergy","Porter, Anthony Toomer, 1828-1902","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project examines the dynamics of pastoral and chaplaincy ministry in a time of rapid, unwanted social change, through a detailed historical study of Episcopal chaplains--including Charles Todd Quintard, Randolph Harrison McKim, and Anthony Toomer Porter--in Confederate service during the US Civil War. These chaplains are sustained and enabled by a strong sense of God's providence and by a clear vision of 'calling' understood through a rather literal application of the Ordinal of the Episcopal Church.
