Narrative liturgical sermons were preached over a three-month period in a large Catholic church. Small group interviews were done with a total of forty-one parishioners. Research in cultural studies, missiology, and liturgical theology, along with personal experience as a pastor in a variety of ministry settings, inform the author's proposal that the weekly celebration of the Eucharist in a local congregation is the center for mission in this time of 'exile.' This research project explores potential reasons for this discontinuity between worship and the world, as well as related issues of cultural context. A general review of current paradigm shifts will include an overview of missio dei. An eschatological emphasis will invite a return to New Testament ecclesial practice.
