This missionary incentive is supported by the preaching ministry of the church.  Three types of sermons are suggested as best suited to support this missionary incentive, including mystagogical preaching, apologetic preaching and missional preaching.  The intended purpose is that listeners of such sermons will develop a stronger connection between their participation in the Table and what it means to be sent for mission and ministry in the world. He also did a synod-wide survey of all LCMS pastors to determine current practices and attitudes concerning the frequency of offering the Lord's Supper. The results showed that the Lord's Supper was at the center of weekly worship in scripture and in the first three centuries in the early church. The results also showed a recovery of this understanding in the Lutheran Reformation.
