The project included the administration of a survey to all appointed pastors-in-charge in the NCC. A definition of discipleship was developed based on Jesus' model, history and current cultural realities. Eucharistic themes and practice were explored theologically and historically with an emphasis on a Wesleyan world view. The model presented in this study is that discipleship is to be the channel through which the themes of the eucharist are introduced into a believer's life. Issues addressed in the project include: 1) whether members of the local congregation have a clear understanding of the relationship between the sacrament of Holy Communion and the mission of the church, 2) whether a more complete knowledge and understanding of Holy Communion has an impact upon their perception of the church's mission, and 3) whether the way in which Holy Communion is practiced influences the way in which they attempt to fulfill the mission of the church. Such an intensive approach increases sacramental knowledge and appreciation of the sacraments in the congregation, but it is only a beginning. The study evaluated ministry to children, reviewed Free Methodist theology of the Lord's Supper, examined the practices of other denominations with regard to children and Communion, and analyzed how children learn.  A curriculum, combining storytelling, the use of objects, wondering questions, play, drama, and music, was developed and tested in two Free Methodist churches. This goal was pursued through a series of seven sermons on the key theological images, followed by weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper, coupled with seven adult classes and four sessions with children. Six Bible studies provide the biblical basis for a series of eight group sessions in which theological, historical and practical considerations for communion are addressed. It departed from its Wesleyan and classical origins during its New World development.  Research for this study is based on a questionnaire and a review of the historical development of American Methodism.  Data is drawn from one hundred pastors in the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. The results of the study indicate a disparity between Methodist practice and piety with regard to the Eucharist.  This disparity contributes to the recent ills of the denomination.  Methodism's rediscovery of its classical piety is urgent. The basic purpose was to aid United Methodists in the appropriation of their catholic heritage through an actual study of the pertinent eucharistic writings of the two Wesleys.  The largest part of the dissertation deals with the following eucharistic motifs found in the Wesleyan literature: constant communion, real presence, sacrifice and medicine of immortality.  Attention is also given to Wesley's 1784 Sunday Service, Methodism's Anglican roots and the progress of liturgical renewal in the United Methodist Church.
