The research included a survey of WELS pastor's interviews with pastors and homiletics professors, and a Delphi group of congregational members. Ten key issues for improving preaching were identified and will become the focus of twelve issues of the Preach the Word newsletter received by WELS pastors. He conducted a workshop on narrative preaching, with a group of pastors from southern Brazil, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating the theory and practice of narrative preaching into the pastors' ministry. Questionnaires, written sermons, and written evaluations were reviewed upon completion of the workshop. To answer that question, 70 pastors of the Southern Illinois District, Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod were asked if they ever used a pre-sermon Bible study to help the hearer listen to the sermon. A seven-week pre-sermon Bible study was developed and taught based on four filters of hearing. Those filters were logos, ethos, pathos, and community. A post-sermon survey was given and separated into two categories, those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study and those who did not. The results were fairly conclusive that those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study had a greater connection to both the sermon and the preacher. She decided to look more closely at the process that takes place between reading the text and up to the point of delivering the sermon.  She read the literature to look for different methods to increase and release creativity.  She gathered a group of respondents to listen to and afterwards discuss three of her sermons which she was to prepare using these methods.  Her goal was to see if they could tell any difference in her way of preaching before and after the usage of these methods.  After applying the different methods to her sermon preparation, the focus group could not see any difference, and the author still had her anxiety. The guidelines are intended to give direction to the pastors of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Peoria, Illinois, and also to assist other pastors. Since the pastors at Redeemer Lutheran Church currently use projection media for sermons, this project was intended to hone and clarify what they are already doing. Since many pastors seek to use projection to enhance their sermons, this project was designed to assist them in doing so. The primary component of this study was a series of 8 sermons preached by the researcher. The subjects in the study were tested for retention and comprehension of the sermon material as well as slide content. The study actually produced the opposite of what was expected, but on the basis of the acquired information, pastors were able to make adjustments to their usage and the research provided reasoned guidelines reflecting what was learned. This paper is especially geared toward my colleagues in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod whose congregations seem to struggle in those more diverse communities. It advocates preaching as a multisensory, celebratory encounter with the love of God in Jesus Christ that has universal appeal. My intention in this thesis is to combine expressionistic imagery with African American celebrative preaching.  Most Swedish sermons are cognitive and didactic and without celebration.  Preachers tend to concentrate more on law than gospel.  After such a sermon there might be some quiet time for reflection.  Through imaginative expressionistic celebrative preaching I will bring to Swedish preaching color and joy, which will help the listener experience the assurance of grace.  In this thesis I have defined expressionistic preaching and described the African American celebrative sermon and its theology.  I have also presented imaginative homiletics and its theology and presented a psychological model of interpretation of the imaginary and the mystic experience. In my thesis I have made a descriptive study of the effects in the listeners after an expressionistic celebrative sermon and described the problems with celebration in a Swedish context and given a psychological explanation for the absence of instantaneous celebration.  My conclusions are: The expressionistic celebrative sermon is a colorful and positive experience.  Swedish listeners experience the assurance of grace, but they don't celebrate as a group. The intended purpose is that listeners of such sermons will develop a stronger connection between their participation in the Table and what it means to be sent for mission and ministry in the world.
