Integration of treatment modalities for both the abused and abuser are stressed including individual, group, and couples approaches as determined to be appropriate for each marital dyad.  Using case study methodology, the continuum of violence as an expression of anger/frustration versus violence as an instrument of control are examined. The thesis is that pastors are best prepared to intervene in abusive marriages when they have: 1) become knowledgeable about the nature and dynamics of the abusive marriage; 2) addressed their own fears and biases about violence in the home; 3) understood that theologically, violence and abuse are outside the scope of normative Christian marriage; and 4) are prepared to intervene in such a way that both partners are helped to recognize and receive help, and will support, if necessary, separation and divorce as viable solutions to the problem.
