Two sets of skills are employed: a system design whereby the goals and format of the project are delineated, implemented and evaluated; and, theological reflection in which personal stories are shared and reflected upon in the light of faith.  The project was developed with six parish couples who shared their stories of faith and commitment with couples who were preparing for marriage. The study discusses the traditional Chinese family-orientation and its continued influence in the values, attitudes and behavior of the English-educated, urban middle-class Singapore Chinese.  The introduction of Western cultural norms through the process of modernization was readily accepted as a basis for marriage and family life.  However, the continued influence of the traditional family-orientation was to be a significant cause of dysfunctional marriages among these couples. The thesis is that pastors are best prepared to intervene in abusive marriages when they have: 1) become knowledgeable about the nature and dynamics of the abusive marriage; 2) addressed their own fears and biases about violence in the home; 3) understood that theologically, violence and abuse are outside the scope of normative Christian marriage; and 4) are prepared to intervene in such a way that both partners are helped to recognize and receive help, and will support, if necessary, separation and divorce as viable solutions to the problem. The author indicates important issues in premarital counseling. Experience with divorced persons who choose to remarry aids him in understanding the signposts and cautions, the strengths and limitations of a marriage relationship. Insight into the struggles and pains of first marriages, and willingness to share how that experience informs their second marriage is an important resource for identifying key issues in the development of healthy or unhealthy relationships.  Significant personal and interpersonal issues in growing with another person in a marriage relationship are dependence, independence and interdependence. After reviewing three currently available programs, the Kerber Model is presented which uses a variety of techniques to facilitate couple communication and discovery.  The model was proof tested in a retreat setting and results are assessed. The primary focus is on symbiosis and separation-individuation. It is seen that successful attainment of a symbiotic relationship between mother and infant is essential if the next phase, separation-individuation is to take place in the infant's normal movement to autonomy.  In working with two people, a man and woman, who have opted for a heterosexual relationship with each other, a principal area of conflict is in their inability to function autonomously. The developmental phases known as symbiosis and separation-individuation not having been satisfactorily achieved for either, the relationship has been an unsuccessful attempt to redress, or correct what went askew in the nursery. The author shows the therapeutic techniques employed to begin the reeducative process so that both may eventually be capable of making autonomous choices relatively free from the conflicts that now make such choices impossible. Robert's defenses are obsessive compulsive neurosis, while Mary's are hysterical.  Their marriage began more tentatively than most, with Mary continuing to rent a separate apartment and continuing an affair, thus preserving the boundaries that were not available in the incestuous family of her origins.  Robert's boundaries were too rigid, and his sexuality highly repressed.  In the course of the therapy the marriage is strengthened; the apartment is given up and the affair ended.  The author considers major theoretical contributions to the practice of therapy including Margaret Mahler's studies of the first three years of life as early sources of intrapsychic and interpersonal conflict.  Object relations theory is explored. Family systems theory focuses on the dynamic interaction within a whole, complementing object relations theory. The therapist is seen as a facilitator in the process of change. Recognition of the need for church ministry to this group prompted this study.  Literature from the marriage enrichment movement was studies.  A more intense study of two enrichment programs, National Marriage Encounter and the Association of Couples for Marriage Enrichment (ACME), included the examination of their manuals, newsletters and periodicals.  Experiential data was obtained from existing literature as well as the writer's and his wife's involvement in marriage enrichment programs.  The writer personally interviewed national leaders of both National Marriage Encounter and ACME.  A transcription of these interviews is included.  The marriage enrichment movement can provide important resources, such as programs, literature, and theory, to church leaders for ministry to recently married couples. The programs in both National Marriage Encounter and ACME could be adapted for use with newlyweds and two other programs developed specifically for first year married couples are presented. This project addresses these challenges by proposing a three-to-four session model of premarital counseling.  The model was designed over seven years of parish ministry.  Twenty-three clergy in seven dioceses were questioned concerning methods of premarital counseling and the need for a model.  The model also incorporates findings from a survey of literature on: dealing with marriage, divorce and remarriage; the experiences of separation, divorce and remarriage, and reconstituting families; premarital counseling; and Episcopal canon law on holy matrimony. It presents the need and theological foundations for such a ministry.  Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather data from clergy, remarrieds and about to be remarrieds.  Study of literature and audio resources on remarriage were also pursued.  Seminars can be designed to help prepare couples for remarriage.  The study discusses design, implementation and evaluation of a 'planning on remarriage' seminar and addresses barriers for doing so in a conservative evangelical setting.
