It includes: criterion for selecting lay counselors, defining pastoral and lay responsibilities, identifying basic counseling procedures, defining roles of the husband and wife, developing the art of communication, resolving conflicts, managing finances, follow up procedures, and evaluations. Insights and principles were compiled into a training manual.  Five couples were trained. This thesis/project is a descriptive study of the premarital counseling practices of a sample of 20 pastors in the Presbytery of Genesee Valley, New York, who were interviewed to ascertain their practices concerning inclusion of discussion of five areas of marital satisfaction which appear to be important for the content of premarital counseling: background information, communications, money, religion, and sexuality.  There is a wide divergence in the premarital counseling practices of pastors.  Some do an excellent job, but the majority of the sample appear to be struggling or frustrated in their practice of premarital counseling. Presented to a small group of no more than seven couples over six sessions, the format combines theory presentation, discussion, home assignments and skill development.  Couples who took the course indicated improvement in their relationship-development skills and a clarification of values and goals for their relationship.  The participants felt that they could deal with conflict more openly and creatively than before and had learned some important communication skills. Its basic thesis is that a minister possessing minimal counseling training can effectively prepare couples for marriage by adherence to its design.  The theological grounding of the project is pastoral and process and it contains a critical examination of the role of the church in marriage.  In addition, an extensive survey of other methods of preparing couples for marriage is presented. Investigating alcoholism-complicated marriages and a control group of non-alcholic couples revealed that non-drinking marriages can experience superior marital satisfaction.  Two factors contributed to this satisfaction: each marriage partner took responsibility for his or her own growth and change and both mates shared a common spiritual life. Emphasis and application of truth were laid on seven basic areas of marital needs: purpose, five parables of Christ, self-image, communication, trust, sexuality and spirituality.  Fourteen persons attended the workshop for thirteen weeks.  A pre-test and a post-test were carefully coded. Participants reported their marriages were enriched.  The data showed areas which were not affected and where other courses could be developed.
